Job summary

AltaStream Energy Systems is seeking a hands-on Generator Technician to install, commission, maintain, and repair diesel and natural-gas generator systems, switchgear/ATS, and related controls. You will support field service, warranty repairs, preventive maintenance, and project commissioning to ensure reliable prime and standby power.

The role requires strong experience with engines, alternators, LV/MV distribution, PLCs, and OEM tools.

Qualifications

  • Experience servicing generator or power-system equipment in industrial/commercial settings.
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot PLC issues, read ladder logic, and use HMI systems.
  • Legally able to work in Canada; VISA sponsorship not available.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repairs on generator sets (diesel & natural gas), alternators, and control systems.
  • Install and commission gensets, switchgear/ATS, control panels, fuel systems, and auxiliaries.
  • Execute load-bank testing, frequency/voltage adjustments, and document test results.
  • Travel to customer sites for commissioning and service activities, up to 75–90%.

Position Overview:

AltaStream is seeking a hands-on Generator Technician (Gen Tech) to install, commission, maintain, and repair diesel and natural-gas generator systems, switchgear/ATS, and associated controls. Youll support field service, warranty repairs, preventive maintenance programs, and project commissioning to ensure reliable operation of prime and standby power systems for our customers.


As a Generator Technician, you will be a vital team member responsible for commissioning, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical and electrical systems. With core skills in generator knowledge, including mechanical and electrical experience, you will excel in working with digital control systems, analyzing schematics, and conducting root cause analysis. Your premium skills in industrial maintenance and industrial electrician experience will be valuable in ensuring efficient operations and minimizing downtime. Additionally, your relevant experience in customer service will enhance your ability to deliver high-quality service to our clients.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Perform diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repairs on generator sets (diesel & natural gas), alternators, and control systems.

  • Install and commission gensets, switchgear/ATS, control panels, fuel systems, and auxiliaries (exhaust SCR/DPF, site PLC/SCADA systems).

  • Execute load-bank testing, frequency/voltage adjustments, and performance verification, document test results.

  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and controls issues using OEM tools and service manuals (Deep Sea, ComAp, Woodward, CAT, Baudouin, etc.).

  • Complete service reports, parts requests, and work orders accurately and on time; maintain service records.

  • Assist in the generation of processes, work instructions and forms for safe and efficient execution.

  • Support FAT/SAT and site commissioning alongside engineering and project teams.

  • Adhere to safety, environmental, and QA/QC procedures; maintain a clean, organized work area and service vehicle.

  • Good understanding of workplace hazards in high-voltage and electrical generating facilities, with the ability to implement appropriate safety measures.

  • Participate in after-hours/on-call rotation and travel to customer sites as needed.

  • Daily work hours and shifts are subject to change based on project requirements; applicants must be flexible to accommodate these changes when required.

  • Ability to work for extended periods out of town with unobstructed ability and willingness to travel up to 75-90% of the time, domestically and internationally, with required multi-overnight stays.


Qualifications & Skills:


  • 39 years’ experience servicing generator or power-system equipment in industrial/commercial settings.

  • Strong understanding of engines, alternators, electrical distribution (LV/MV), and control systems.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose PLC (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Deep Sea) issues, read ladder logic, and navigate HMI systems.

  • Ability to read wiring diagrams, single-line drawings, P&IDs, and OEM service documentation.

  • Experience with ATS/switchgear, fuel systems, and emissions equipment (SCR/DPF) is an asset.

  • Proficient with diagnostic tools, multimeters and testing equipment, and laptop-based controller interfaces.

  • Class 5 BC Drivers Licence with clean record.

  • Technical Diploma or Associate's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or related Industrial Technology field.

  • Strong customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Must be legally able to work in Canada, VISA Sponsorship is not available for this position.

  • A valid first aid certificate.

  • Proficiency in Windows-based software applications and work order management systems.


Preferred Experience:


  • Trade certification (Industrial Electrician, Heavy-Duty/Mechanic, Millwright, or equivalent) and/or Power Engineering ticket are assets.

  • Data-center, microgrid, telecom, or oil & gas environments.

  • Containerized/modular power systems and BESS integration.

  • Familiarity with major OEMs: Cummins, CAT, Kohler, Generac, MTU, etc.
