Job summary

The General Manager, Facilities Construction provides senior leadership for the planning and delivery of renovation and construction projects across YMCA-owned facilities, including health and fitness centres, camps, and related properties, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, on budget, and to YMCA standards within active, occupied environments. The role combines strong technical construction expertise with project leadership and stakeholder coordination to align capital delivery with operational needs and organizational priorities, supporting the effective execution of infrastructure investments that enable safe, reliable, and sustainable facilities for members and communities.

In this role, you will:

  • Oversee planning, budgeting, procurement, execution, deficiency management, and warranty closeout across multiple concurrent renovation and construction projects ranging from $20,000 to $5 million.
  • Lead the planning, prioritization, and delivery of capital investments in collaboration with senior leaders to support organizational priorities and maximize the effective use of capital resources.
  • Manage multiple concurrent renovation and construction projects, typically ranging from $50,000 to $250,000, and prioritize workloads to ensure effective delivery.
  • Lead technical project delivery across mechanical, electrical, building envelope, roofing, and energy systems, including solar, generators, and high‑voltage infrastructure.
  • Oversee interior and finish improvement projects, including flooring, tiling, painting, and front‑of‑house upgrades.
  • Coordinate and manage contractors, consultants, and vendors to ensure alignment with project scope, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Manage preventative maintenance contractors for systems such as HVAC and elevators, including performance monitoring, regular meetings, and issue resolution.
  • Collaborate with site facility managers and general managers to coordinate construction activities and minimize operational and member disruption.
  • Provide construction leadership and project management expertise to Facilities teams and operational leaders to strengthen organizational capacity and promote consistent project delivery practices across the Association.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, safety standards, and regulatory requirements across all construction activities.
  • Develop and maintain stakeholder communication plans to support effective coordination in active project environments.
  • Support sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives across capital and renovation projects.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, schedules, and reporting systems to support project tracking and accountability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

You bring:

  • Post‑secondary education in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 10–15 years of experience in construction or project management.
  • Experience managing projects of varying size, scope, and technical complexity within active or operational environments.
  • Experience working in active or operational facilities during construction.
  • Experience managing contractors and procurement processes, including coordinating multiple stakeholders and ensuring alignment with project requirements.
  • Experience with pools and aquatic systems is considered an asset.
  • Strong technical background in engineering, trades, or technical project management, with the ability to apply technical knowledge to project planning and execution.
  • Working knowledge of energy systems and infrastructure projects within a facilities or construction environment.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs and contractor oversight within facility or infrastructure projects.
  • Proficiency in project management software and tools.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and collaborate across clients, contractors, and internal teams.
