Job summary

YMCA of Greater Toronto is seeking a Facility Manager to lead cleaning and maintenance operations at the Markham centre. You will supervise day staff, manage maintenance contracts, and drive safety and quality across all services.

The role requires extensive facilities experience, strong leadership, and a commitment to the YMCA mission. Responsibilities include budgeting, project coordination, and staff development.

Qualifications

  • Post-Secondary Education or equivalent experience.
  • RPA Certificate (Real Property Administration) and/or enrollment in a program leading to a Certified Facility Management designation or equivalent.
  • Experience with wireless technology and CRM systems is an asset.
  • WHMIS and Workplace Safety Core Training.
  • 10+ years in skilled trades or building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of electrical/plumbing, HVAC, and pool systems is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the cleaning and maintenance team to ensure a clean, safe, and well-maintained center.
  • Provide hands-on services and supervision in maintenance, cleaning, and service contractors.
  • Maintain YMCA standards and implement SAM Action Plan for cleaning and maintenance.
  • Recruit, hire, develop, and lead maintenance and housekeeping staff and volunteers, including shift schedules.
  • Coordinate tradespeople for cleaning, repairs, and capital projects; monitor contract services for quality and compliance.
  • Develop and control cleaning, maintenance, refurbishment plans, schedules, and budgets.
  • Oversee capital project planning with senior management and approve budgets.
  • Participate in OH&S initiatives and ensure safety practices in line with province regulations.
  • Assist in facility refurbishment projects following Property Management guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Facility Manager is an integral part of the management team, playing a leadership role in implementing standards of Service Excellence (Cleaning and Maintenance Audits) to ensure the delivery of high quality service to members.

This is a hands-on position responsible for implementation of a fully integrated cleaning program that includes day staff, laundry services for towels, after hour contract cleaning, comprehensive preventative maintenance program, asset management, refurbishment, and capital project management. In addition to a fully integrated cleaning program, the incumbent is also responsible for the promotion of a "cleaning culture" among all YMCA staff and volunteers in the centre. The incumbent will be a team leader who displays good communication skills, holds flexible hours to meet the needs of the site, and is service/quality driven.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the cleaning and maintenance team to ensure a clean, safe, and well-maintained center.
  • Provide hands-on services and supervision in the areas of maintenance, cleaning, and service contractors.
  • Maintain YMCA standards and prepare and implement SAM Action Plan - cleaning and maintenance.
  • Recruit, hire, develop, and lead maintenance, cleaning, housekeeping staff, and volunteers, including preparation of shift schedules.
  • Direct and co-ordinate all relevant tradespeople for cleaning, repairs, and maintenance performed on equipment, building systems, refurbishment, and capital projects, as required. Monitor contract services to ensure quality standards are met and contract compliance.
  • Develop, maintain, and control cleaning, maintenance, and refurbishment plans, schedules, and expenditures in accordance with the approved budget and procedures.
  • Implement the approved facility refurbishment program following guidelines set out by the Property Management team.
  • Contribute to the leadership of the Occupational Health and Safety Committee. Ensure the health and safety of employees by implementing safety practices and procedures (including WHMIS) following the Ontario Health and Safety Act.
  • Prepare and prioritize capital projects in conjunction with the General Manager, Health & Fitness and the General Manager Facilities, Property Management for the Senior Vice President, Property Management's approval, following guidelines set out by the Association. Assume the role of project manager and monitor the budget for capital projects, in coordination with the Project Management team.
  • Perform the role of Service Leader and/or Acting General Manager as required.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development activities, and Association and facility functions. Self-manage ongoing professional development.
  • Actively participate in the Facility Manager Task Force, building on shared learning to research and implement best practices and code compliance across all YMCA facilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

You bring:

  • Post-Secondary Education or equivalent experience
  • RPA Certificate (Real Property Administration) and/or enrollment in a program leading to a Certified Facility Management designation or equivalent in Building Facility Management
  • Experience and knowledge with wireless technology, including CRM systems, conditioning equipment with integrated television, etc., and CRM, kiosks—an asset
  • WHMIS and Workplace Safety Core Training
  • Minimum of 10 years of related experience in skilled trades and/or building maintenance, preferably in one or more of the following areas:
  • Electrical/Plumbing
  • Operating Engineering/Pneumatics
  • Mechanical HVAC
  • Experience in pool filtration/water chemistry—an asset; Pool Operator Certificate preferred (certification must be obtained within the first three months)
  • Knowledge and experience in ensuring compliance with related legislation
  • Excellent leadership skills, results-oriented, driven by initiative
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and communicate excellently with members, staff, and volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Solid computer skills, comfortable working with Outlook, MS Explorer, MS Excel, BAS systems, financial software, and Facility Management applications
  • Focus on quality, creativity, and innovation
  • Previous experience in a supervisory position and in the achievement of administrative tasks
  • Excellent understanding of diversity, inclusion and equity including the ability to identify and address barriers Health and Fitness work effectively with diverse stakeholders, and integrate equity into program design
