General Manager, Agriculture

Reports To

Regional Vice President, Alberta and Northern BC Solid Waste

Summary

The General Manager, Agriculture is responsible for setting the strategic direction and executing on the production, distribution, and sale of Bio-Sul Premium Plus Fertilizer. This includes sourcing product, ensuring operational effectiveness, creating sales/marketing plans, and managing environmental and safety impacts. The role requires providing leadership to foster positive employee/employer relations, projecting a professional corporate image, and promoting profitable operations and resource management, high production standards, and risk management. Business expansion where appropriate is also part of the role.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
  • Establish pricing structures for Bio-Sul and other applicable products.
  • Develop sales and marketing strategies to increase profitability.
  • Identify growth opportunities within primary and secondary market areas, including contracts and acquisitions.
  • Monitor market trends impacting quality of service or profit margins.
  • Plan and implement budgets.
Operational Responsibilities
  • Implement corporate guidelines for preventive maintenance to reduce downtime and costs.
  • Maintain quality control for Bio-Sul production to ensure high-quality products.
  • Manage third-party contracts effectively.
  • Monitor and report business statistics weekly and monthly.
  • Use purchase order systems with clear purchasing guidelines.
  • Create and foster a team-oriented environment.
Financial Management
  • Develop and oversee cost control programs.
  • Conduct profitability analyses and review monthly.
  • Ensure timely billing and revenue collection.
  • Review profit and loss statements monthly and adjust as necessary.
  • Create operational profit plans including income sources, costs, growth, productivity, margins, and capital needs.
  • Review and negotiate contracts regularly.
  • Provide accurate monthly forecasts and operational reviews with senior management.
Customer Engagement and Management
  • Promote a customer-focused approach.
  • Manage sales objectives and priorities.
  • Participate in community activities and represent the company positively.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and company policies.
  • Meet all customer service needs.
  • Manage contracts and proposals.
Team Management
  • Maintain a motivated workforce through effective hiring, training, and evaluation.
Safety and Human Resources Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with wage laws and safety standards.
  • Promote a safe working environment and safety programs.
  • Set performance goals and conduct follow-ups.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma (college or university), or demonstrated operational management experience.
  • Minimum five years' experience in the agriculture industry preferred, or equivalent education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the agriculture industry; fertilizer industry knowledge is an asset.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and management skills.
  • Ability to interpret safety rules, manuals, reports, and correspondence; effective speaking skills.
  • Willingness to travel to visit customers and establish relationships.
