Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in building and ground maintenance or new construction required.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s license or equivalent is required.
  • Alberta Trade Certificate is an asset.

We are seeking afull-time permanent General Maintenance Worker and perform routine preventive, and demand maintenance to buildings, grounds, exhibits, fences, parking lots, and other assets. This is your opportunity to offer your skills to support the care for the wildlife in our care and ensure spaces are ready for the thousands of visitors who come each day to learn about conservation!

What you will do:

  • Perform general building, grounds and habitats preventative maintenance and repair tasks including but not limited to interior and exterior; concrete & masonry work, basic carpentry, millwork, painting, furniture, signs, doors, floors, building envelope, fences, gates and other assets.
  • Carry out daily building maintenance tasks in a timely, efficient and safe manner.
  • Efficiently perform preventive maintenance tasks as per the CMMS program schedule.
  • Develop innovative solutions to assist internal customers with maintenance related issues.
  • Assist in animal transfer and shipping.
  • Purchase materials as required from suppliers as per the zoo's procurement policy.
  • Efficiently execute demand work orders as assigned and complete CMMS work order administrative requirements.
  • Interacts with internal trades, external contractors and all staff Zoo wide as an active collaborative and cooperative team member.
  • Additional training that may be required and provided by the Zoo includes; WHMIS, workforce orientation, vehicle operator training, zoonotic disease awareness, skid steer training, telehandler training, aerial platform lift training respiratory protection, pest control, ozone awareness training, lock out/tag out, hazard assessment & control, forklift training, fire extinguisher training, fall protection, confined space, Code Adam, asbestos/mold training, transportation of dangerous goods.

What you will bring:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in building and ground maintenance or new construction is required
  • A High School Diploma is required.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s license or equivalent is required.
  • Alberta Trade Certificate is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of shop wood working equipment (table saw, skill saw, drills, etc.) and power hand tools is required.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Experience operating bobcats and light machinery is an asset.
  • Well-developed organizational and communication skills and the ability to work with other trades
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently and as part of a team required.
  • Strong focus on customer service is needed.

Working Conditions:

  • This position requires the individual to work under various conditions including adverse weather conditions, various heights, physical demands (heavy lifting, walking, etc.), confined spaces, pungent odors, near animals, and near zoo visitors.
  • 8-hour shifts, some weekends, day shifts only.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Required to lift items weighing over 20 kilograms.

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
