Job summary

Ideal Gear & Machine Works Inc. in Delta, British Columbia, is seeking an experienced Gear Technician to operate CNC gear-grinding equipment, set up jobs, and produce precision gear components to tight tolerances.

You will review drawings, calibrate and document production and inspection records, and collaborate with Quality, Shop Supervision, and other departments. A Journeyperson certification is an asset, with strong mechanical aptitude and fault-finding skills a must.

Qualifications

  • Five+ years of gearing or gear-manufacturing experience.
  • Experience in a gear-manufacturing shop.
  • Experience operating CNC gear-grinding equipment or related gear-production machinery.
  • Strong understanding of gearing principles and tolerances.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specs, and job travelers.
  • Journeyperson certification in Machinist/Millwright/Industrial Mechanic/HET is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC gear-grinding equipment with supervision.
  • Review job travellers, drawings, specs before starting.
  • Load, align, and unload components accurately.
  • Grind gear teeth to precise tolerances and surface finish.
  • Monitor machine performance and adjust to maintain specs.
  • Use measurement systems to verify dimensions and document results.
  • Collaborate with Quality and Shop Supervision to resolve variances.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area and follow procedures.

Ideal Gear & Machine Works Inc. is seeking an experienced Gear Technician to join our specialized gearbox manufacturing team in Delta, British Columbia.

This is an opportunity for a technically skilled professional to work with advanced CNC gear-grinding equipment and manufacture critical components to exceptionally tight tolerances. Reporting to the Shop Supervisor, the Gear Technician is responsible for setting up and operating CNC gear-grinding equipment with supervisory support. The role involves grinding gear teeth to exact specifications, using onboard measuring technology, maintaining accurate production and calibration records, and working closely with Shop Supervision and Quality to ensure every part meets demanding technical requirements.

What You’ll Do
  • Set up and operate CNC gear-grinding equipment with support from the Shop Supervisor.
  • Review job travellers, engineering drawings, specifications, and related documentation before beginning work.
  • Load, align, and unload components safely and accurately.
  • Grind gear teeth to precise dimensional, profile, lead, pitch, and surface-finish requirements.
  • Monitor machine performance and make appropriate adjustments to maintain drawing specifications and tight tolerances.
  • Use onboard measuring systems and other inspection methods to verify part dimensions and determine required corrections.
  • Interpret inspection results and collaborate with Quality and Shop Supervision to resolve variances.
  • Determine when grinding wheels require dressing or replacement.
  • Support the identification and development of tooling, fixtures, and workholding requirements.
  • Complete production, inspection, calibration, and traceability documentation accurately.
  • Identify equipment, tooling, quality, or process concerns and communicate them promptly.
  • Assist with troubleshooting gear-manufacturing processes and mechanical components.
  • Maintain equipment and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
  • Follow all company safety, quality, and operating procedures.
  • Contribute ideas that improve quality, consistency, productivity, and workflow.
What You Bring
  • At least five years of relevant gearing or gear-manufacturing experience.
  • Previous experience working in a gear-manufacturing shop.
  • Practical experience operating CNC gear-grinding equipment or closely related gear-production machinery.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and an understanding of gearing principles.
  • A fundamental understanding of gearboxes, mechanical components, repair practices, and testing methods.
  • Experience troubleshooting machining, mechanical, or gear-manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, schematics, and job travellers.
  • Experience using precision measuring and inspection equipment.
  • Ability to understand inspection results and make controlled machine adjustments.
  • Comfort working with tight tolerances and completing detailed production documentation.
  • A Journeyperson certification in one of the following trades is considered an asset:
    • Machinist
    • Millwright
    • Industrial Mechanic
    • Heavy Equipment Technician
