What you’ll do

The role of Emergency Medical Call Taker (EMCT) is the first point of contact in 911 calls directed to ambulance services. Working in a call-centre environment, the EMCT provides support to the public via telephone in cases of emergency medical situations. Gathering and sharing vital information, the EMCT acts as the liaison between the caller, dispatch team, paramedic crews, and hospitals. Tasks during any shift include:

  • Using exceptional customer service skills while remaining calm and focused in stressful, high-pressure situations, adapting quickly in a dynamic environment
  • Prioritizing multiple competing tasks using a methodical approach to problem solve, make decisions, and communicate clearly
  • Taking a leadership role while actively building relationships with team members and callers
  • Seeking win-win solutions, maintaining professionalism in cases of healthy conflict, and supporting/managing differences of opinion

What you bring

Initial Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Valid certificates in Standard First Aid and CPR Level C (must be obtained before the start of EMCT Training)
  • 2+ years’ experience in customer service
  • Experience in a call centre is an asset
  • Fluent spoken and written English
  • Minimum typing speed of 30 WPM (net)

Additional Skills & Knowledge:

  • Awareness of and commitment to understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and related reports. Commitment to creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration.
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities impacting Indigenous communities, familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.) is a strong asset.

Next Steps in the Recruitment Process:
  1. Shortlisted candidates will receive an email invitation to complete the online CritiCall assessment. You have up to three hours to complete it.
  2. Successful candidates will then complete a pre-screening personality assessment, used to determine the best fit.
  3. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an observation shift, listening to live calls with an experienced call-taker. Note: BCEHS does NOT reimburse travel or relocation costs.
  4. Finally, you will be invited for a behavioral-based interview.

Job Type: Irregular, full-time

Wage: $32.60 hourly

Location: Langford Dispatch Operations Centre, 2764 Leigh Road, Victoria, BC V9B 4G1

Hours: Shifts on weekdays and weekends, rotational shifts, 24/7 operation, typically 2x 12-hour day shifts, 2x 12-hour overnight shifts, then 6 days off.
