Job description

Position: Freelance Interpreter (English/Lango)

As a freelance interpreter with MCIS Language Solutions, you will provide essential spoken interpretation services in various community settings such as hospitals, police stations, tribunal hearings, schools, and more. Your primary role is to facilitate clear and accurate communication between English and Lango speakers, ensuring individuals with limited language proficiency have access to vital services.

Key Responsibilities

Provide accurate, clear, and professional interpretation between English and Lango in community settings, including high‑pressure environments such as healthcare and legal situations that require quick thinking and attention to detail.
Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and awareness when working with diverse communities, ensuring that both meaning and tone are faithfully conveyed while respecting cultural nuances.
Read and orally translate written materials (e.g., application forms, medical records, legal documents) as needed, conveying information with precision and clarity.
Support vulnerable populations by breaking down linguistic barriers in crucial interactions, enabling them to navigate complex systems such as healthcare, law enforcement, and social services.
Travel to assignment locations as required, accessing assignments via car, public transport, or other means – flexibility is key, as assignments may vary in location and time.
Handle over‑the‑phone or video interpretation assignments in addition to in‑person interpretation, offering flexibility and the ability to work from home when applicable.
Maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality while interpreting sensitive information, particularly in healthcare, legal, or other confidential contexts.

Requirements

Fluency in English and Lango (both written and spoken) is required for accurate and effective interpretation.
Strong ability to read and interpret written documents accurately, converting them into clear and precise oral translations.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including empathy, patience, and a commitment to service. Ability to build rapport with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and provide a supportive, non‑judgmental service.
Reliable transportation to travel to different locations as needed.
Legal eligibility to work in Canada.

Training and Support

New interpreters receive a free online training module designed to prepare them for assignments, which must be completed before starting any work.
Experienced interpreters who have been tested and certified in community interpreting are welcomed – your expertise will be highly valued.

Job Type: Part‑time, Casual, Freelance

Salary: CA$20.00 to CA$25.00 per hour (based on experience and assignment type)
