Job summary

Motion Recruitment Partners is seeking a Senior Forward Deployed Java Engineer in Test (SDET) for a major bank in Mississauga, Ontario. The role spans full-stack development and architecture, delivering production-grade solutions for trading, risk, and operations.

The candidate will prototype with Java or Python, drive UX with stakeholders, and own technical sequencing from discovery to delivery in a remote-to-hybrid setup. Contract duration is 6+ months with potential extension.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience in full-stack to FDE-style delivery.
• Expert-level Java (Core Java, Spring Boot, Microservices) and/or strong Python (FastAPI/Flask).
• Ability to work across Java and Python codebases or ramp up quickly on the second language.
• Hands-on CI/CD experience with Tekton/OpenShift Pipelines and Jenkins.
• Strong DB expertise across Oracle, MS SQL Server, and MongoDB with performance tuning.
• DevOps: containerization (Docker/OpenShift/Kubernetes), IaC, and cloud deployment (AWS/Azure/GCP).
• Excellent communication, technical writing, and stakeholder management skills.
• High agency and comfort in fast-paced client-facing environments.

Responsibilities

• Act as the primary technical contact embedded with client teams to gather requirements and define technical sequencing.
• Prototype and deliver production-ready applications using Java or Python to solve trading, risk, and operational problems.
• Balance scope, speed, and quality to meet client timelines without compromising system integrity.
• Own discovery and scoping engagements, translating business asks into technical specs and delivery plans.
• Demonstrate business acumen, ROI/AI impact, and establish continuous product feedback with stakeholders.
• Produce clear technical documentation and communicate architecture decisions to engineers and non-technical audiences.
• Architect and build scalable full-stack applications using Java and/or Python for enterprise workflows.
• Leverage Python for data analytics and pricing/risk calculations; apply solid data modeling across DBs.
• Ensure enterprise-grade security, auditability, and regulatory compliance across codebases.
• Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines and Kubernetes/OpenShift deployments.

Contract role with strong possibility of extension and conversion to perm. Will require working a remotely with potential to move to hybrid 3 days onsite upon conversion.

Required Technical Skills:

• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience, with demonstrable experience as a Full-Stack Developer transitioning into an FDE-style, customer-facing delivery role.

• Expert-level proficiency in Java (Core Java, Spring Boot, Microservices architecture, REST/gRPC APIs) and/or strong production experience in Python (FastAPI/Flask, data processing libraries).

• Ability to work across both Java and Python codebases, or demonstrated ability to ramp up quickly on the second language.

• Hands-on experience with Tekton/OpenShift Pipelines and Jenkins for CI/CD pipeline design and management.

• Strong database expertise across Oracle Database, MS SQL Server, and MongoDB, including performance tuning and schema design.

• Demonstrated knowledge of DevOps practices: containerization (Docker/OpenShift/Kubernetes), infrastructure as code, and cloud deployment (AWS/Azure/GCP — at least one).

• Excellent communication, technical writing, and stakeholder management skills; comfortable working directly with business stakeholders.

• High agency, ownership mindset, and comfort operating with ambiguity in fast-paced client-facing environments.

Desired Technical Skills

• Domain knowledge of Fintech, Capital Markets, or Spread Products — specifically Securitization (ABS, MBS).

• Prior experience as a Forward Deployed Engineer, Solutions Architect, or Technical Consultant embedded within financial institutions.

• Experience using Python for quantitative analytics, pricing models, or ML-driven risk tooling alongside a Java-based production stack

What You Will Be Doing:

Customer Delivery & Field Engineering

• Act as the primary technical point of contact embedded with client teams to gather requirements, scope solutions, and define technical sequencing.

• Rapidly prototype and deliver production-ready applications — using Java or Python, whichever best fits the use case — that solve real trading, risk, and operational problems.

• Balance tradeoffs between scope, speed, and quality to meet aggressive client timelines without compromising system integrity.

• Own Discovery & Scoping engagements — translating ambiguous business asks into clear technical specifications and delivery plans.

• Demonstrate strong business acumen: understand ROI/AI impact, enterprise workflows, stakeholder management, and establish continuous product feedback loops with client stakeholders.

• Produce clear technical documentation and communicate complex architecture decisions to both engineering and non-technical business audiences.

Architecture & Development

• Architect and build scalable, resilient full-stack applications using Java (Spring Boot/Spring Framework, Microservices) and/or Python (FastAPI/Flask), tailored to enterprise financial workflows.

• Leverage Python for rapid prototyping, data analytics, pricing/risk calculations, and automation scripts where appropriate.

• Apply strong data modeling and query optimization skills across Oracle Database, MS SQL Server, and MongoDB.

• Ensure solutions are built with enterprise-grade security, auditability, and regulatory compliance across both Java and Python codebases.

DevOps, CI/CD & Infrastructure

• Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Tekton (Red Hat OpenShift Pipelines) and Jenkins to enable rapid, reliable, and auditable deployments for both Java and Python services.

• Deploy and manage containerized workloads on OpenShift/Kubernetes, applying infrastructure-as-code best practices.

• Be fluent in at least one major cloud platform and demonstrate the ability to deploy infrastructure as code reliably and repeatably.

• Own production readiness: ensure what is built won't break or behave unexpectedly once live — including monitoring, alerting, rollback strategies, and incident response support.
