Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The Food Services Coordinator coordinates the food services operations for a ministry unit’s program, to ensure compliance with the Canada Food Guide and applicable health regulations. The incumbent provides general coordination to the Program through sourcing the food via donations and purchasing and coordinating its preparation.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Prepare nutritious meals in a Homestyle fashion and bake quality food from scratch on a consistent basis.
- Able to organize and have food prepared on time for meal service.
- Prepares and meals including meats, fish, vegetables, soups, sauces, desserts, sandwiches, salads.
- Able to prepare alternates for special diets – low fat, reduced salt, diabetic, allergies.
- Understands the importance of consistency in special diets for the health of guests.
- Works accurately in imperial or metric
- Demonstrates flexibility in making substitutions in menus if circumstances require it.
- Able to provide meals at unscheduled times if required (special fundraisers).
- Adheres to principles/directives of Food Safe in storage, handling, and preparation of food.
- Consistently keeps work areas clean and sanitized in accordance with Health and Safety standards.
- Ability to operates all equipment safely and maintain hygiene standards as per procedures.
- Works cooperatively with other kitchen and food service staff to ensure smooth, professional delivery of service.
- Monitors and records food temperatures during storage, preparation, cooking and service all phases of foods served. (HACCAP standards are to be met)
- Follows direction from Corps Officers
- Communicates supply needs to ensure that all orders adhere to budget and policy
- Communicates with CO/MU Lead any concerns with inventory, recipes, or menu items.
- Train, schedule, assign, and supervise volunteers and seasonal workers (if applicable) for all meals.
- Prepare food for the mobile feeding program/ EDS Response as applicable.
- Adapt work practices within specific parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services.
- Arrange volunteers and workers to assist.
- Ensure the proper temperature of all freezers and fridges.
- Ensure safe handling of food.
- Assist and call authorities if clients are distressed.
- Supervise volunteers to assist in feeding program.
- Maintain and update all appropriate documentation (menu, safety logbooks, donation tracking, meal planning, scheduling etc.)
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
Ensure employees, volunteers and clients operate in conflict-free environment. Call authorities if needed. Governance Boards and Councils: None
Internal: CO/ MU Leader, volunteers, other staff members.
External: Clients, agencies, suppliers, community members.
MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY:
- May supervise, coordinate, train, assign, and oversee volunteers
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Moderate material responsibilities:
- Proper stewardship in minimizing food and material costs.
- Accountable for the maintenance and safe usage of equipment.
- Accountable for the proper care of supplies/food received.
- Regular responsibility for minor financial matters and for wise use of own resources.
- May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash.
- Little input to annual budget or revenue projections in relation to their own job.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Typical working location for this position is in a kitchen in a ministry unit/social services facility or office environment.
- The performance of the job requires a frequent amount of standing, some lifting, and occasionally carrying supplies and walking.
- The incumbent is required to lift to 35 pounds.
- The performance of the job requires frequent attention to adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
- The performance of the job requires moderate attention when menu planning, ordering supplies and reading recipes.
The incumbent works in generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:
- Dealing with people with challenging behaviour
- Verbal abuse
- Hot/Steamy environment
- Noisy
- Crowded in some cases.
- Pressure of timelines
- Multi-tasking
May be exposed to the risks of minor harm, injury, or illness due to:
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Moving objects
- Injury from lifting
- Falling on wet/slippery floors
- Burns, cuts, entering freezers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of one academic year
- Completion of up to two (2) years of Community College will be considered as an asset.
- Professional Cook 1 training or equivalent preferred.
- Food Safe Certification.
- An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- A minimum of two years of prior related experience, including one year of experience in areas of supervision and budgeting.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Child Check (if appropriate).
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Positive attitude.
- Strong sense of integrity & confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $21.83 to $27.29 with a maximum of $32.75.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
