Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Food Bank Assistant will support the Food Bank Coordinator in the operation of the food bank service and milk program. This role also includes assisting in the development and distribution of nutritional resources throughout the community.

The Food Bank Assistant plays a key role in ensuring access to healthy food and promoting nutritional education within the community.

POSITION DUTIES:

  1. Operational Support: Assist in establishing hours of operation for the food bank and coordinate administrative tasks.
  2. Data Management: Use electronic charting and data systems as required by the Community Wellness Department.
  3. Inventory Control: Monitor inventory and assist in reordering food and supplies to ensure sufficient stock.
  4. Quality Assurance: Help examine deliveries and ensure the accuracy and quality of products received.
  5. Food Sorting & Stocking: Assist in sorting food and organizing food bank shelves for easy access and distribution.
  6. Volunteer Support: Help recruit, train, and monitor volunteers to assist with the Food Bank and Milk Programs.
  7. Food Safety: Ensure that kitchen and food storage areas are organized to meet food safety standards, including protection from pests.
  8. Compliance: Maintain sanitary conditions in storage and distribution areas, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
  9. Nutritional Education: Assist in developing and distributing nutritional information to food bank and milk program users through various mediums.
  10. Food Handling: Ensure that food products are handled according to safety and nutritional standards.
  11. Community Outreach: Support the planning and implementation of culturally appropriate campaigns to promote the Food Bank and Milk Programs and educate the community on nutrition.
  12. Application Processing: Ensure food bank and milk program applications are processed and approved in a timely manner.
  13. Program Support: Collaborate on community events that promote personal wellness and healthy food choices.
  14. Data Collection: Assist in developing and maintaining a data collection process to track the number of individuals served, food distribution, and other program metrics.
  15. Budget & Reporting Support: Aid in the development of program budgets and the preparation of funding proposals for management approval.
  16. Program Evaluation: Participate in program evaluations to help improve service delivery.
  17. Professional Development: Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Preference will be given to members or residents of Sagamok Anishnawbek.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification required (or willingness to obtain).
  • A valid driver’s license is an asset.
  • Flexibility in working hours is required.
  • Confidentiality agreement must be signed and maintained.
  • A criminal record check is required prior to commencing employment.
  • The position is subject to a six-month probation period.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Academic & Experiential:

  • Two years of work-related experience in food preparation, safety, and serving.
  • Certification in Safe Food Handling.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge of and respect for Anishnawbek history, culture, language, and values.
  • Ability to understand and speak Ojibwe is a definite asset.
  • Understanding of issues related to aging and disability.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work well with diverse groups, including children, adults, elders, and co-workers.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and other office software.
