Job summary

Strathroy-Caradoc is seeking a dedicated Flex Operator to maintain parks, facilities, roads and drainage. You will support public works, manage signage and safety devices, and assist with seasonal arena and pool tasks in a fast‑paced municipal environment.

The Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc is currently accepting applications for one (1) full-time permanent \" Flex Operator .\"

Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the appropriate department manager or supervisor, and the technical direction and guidance of the appropriate lead hand, the Flex Operator will maintain parks, related recreational facilities including occasional arena and pool functions. The Flex Operator will also perform a variety of duties related to municipal roads, sidewalks, bridges, drainage, right-of-way elements, and signage.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Public Works (Approx. Mid-November to March):

• Performs general maintenance of the municipal right of way, including winter maintenance of sidewalks and parking lots, etc.


• Safely operates “Non-DZ Equipment” such as sidewalk plows, tractors, loaders, etc. “Non-DZ Equipment” is equipment that does not require a DZ driver’s licence to operate.


• Repair, replace and/or install culverts, storm sewers, sidewalks, signs, safety devices, road fences, snow fences, tile drains, and catch basins.


• Prune, trim and remove trees and brush along Municipal roads and pick up litter and debris.


• Service, wash and perform minor repairs on equipment, as needed.


• Maintain and clean Public Works facilities.


• Use safety equipment as required and report any issues with safety equipment to the Lead Hand.


• Maintain accurate logs of all daily activity and file such logs with the Lead Hand at the end of each day.


• Report road conditions, damage, vandalism to signs and services, and any potential hazards related to the Municipal road system, and report any deficiencies or concerns to the Lead Hand.


• Participate in staff meetings and training as may be required.


• Perform such other related duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Community Services (Approx. April to Mid-November):

• Assist with the effective and efficient performance of maintenance and janitorial duties primarily involving park facilities, and on occasion, arena and pool facilities.


• Assist with the maintenance of parkland and sport fields for the Department. Assists with use of equipment such as front-mounted mowers, line trimmers, ball diamond drags/groomers, push mowers etc.


• Assist with maintenance of playground equipment, bleachers, washrooms and other park related assets as required.


• Responsible for ensuring public safety through the application of due diligence and risk management practices. Ensure the safe operation of municipal recreation equipment and facilities by applying safe work methods and procedures.


• Responsible for maintaining a high level of positive customer service by acting in a frontline service capacity dealing with customers’ pavilion rentals, answering questions and variety of other interactions.


• Participate in staff meetings and training as may be required.


• Complete accident reports, vandalism reports and customer complaint reports as may be required.


• Will be required to work outside and beyond the normal hours of work (weekend and evening shifts).


• Perform such other related duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications:

• Minimum Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent education


• Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act


• Valid class “G” Ontario’s Driver’s Licence with a satisfactory driver’s abstract


• Must be willing to work flexible and sometimes long hours. Must be available to be called in as required


• Experience in operating equipment (i.e. sidewalk plow, mowers, line trimmers, etc.)


• Excellent customer service, communication and interpersonal skills


• Must demonstrate basic digital literacy, including the ability to use the Microsoft business productivity suite, communicate electronically, protect confidential information, follow cybersecurity practices, and learn required municipal systems


• Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check prior to starting employment


• Must be legally authorized to work in Canada

Compensation:

Wage: $26.26/hour, increasing to $29.18/hour following the successful completing of the probationary period (2026 rates)
Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package including enrolment in the Ontario Municipal Employee Retirement System (OMERS) defined benefit pension plan.
