Job summary

The Township of Springwater is seeking a Parks and Facilities Operator II for a 40/20 contract at the Elmvale arena. The position responsibilities include ice making, resurfacing, facility maintenance, and supporting parks, facilities, and recreation spaces throughout the year.

You will work a 40-hour week April–December and 20 hours December–April, with varied shifts including evenings and weekends. A valid driver’s license, safety certifications, and a Two-delivery of duties are required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Secondary School Diploma.
  • 2–5 years of related experience in parks, parks maintenance and/or recreation and facilities.
  • Experience with equipment including grass cutters/tractors, chainsaws, ¼ to 2 ton trucks, weed trimmers, ice re-surfacers, ice edger’s, loaders, ball diamond groomers, small tools, vacuums, skill saws, drills, grinders, rental equipment, etc.
  • A minimum of Basic Arena Refrigeration certificate.
  • Certified Ice Technician (CIT) certificate and/or CPT certificate and propane handling certification would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance and operation of recreation facilities.
  • Knowledge of ice making and maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of maintenance of plumbing and heating systems including inspection and repair.
  • Ability to keep current with new regulations and legislations pertaining to Parks and Recreation.
  • Safety-conscious, time management, and organization with minimal supervision.
  • Valid Class “G” driver’s license in good standing; ability to obtain Class “A” restricted license.

Responsibilities

  • Promote safety and enforce health and safety regulations; ensure safe operating procedures are followed.

The Township of Springwater, located in the heart of Simcoe County, is a mixed urban/rural municipality with growing urban settlements and a prosperous agricultural sector. The municipality is currently recruiting for one existing 12-month, 40/20 hour contract position of Parks and Facilities Operator II. The position will have 40 hours of scheduled work from April through to December, and 20 hours of scheduled work from December through to April.

Reporting directly to the Supervisor, Parks (April to August) Supervisor, Facilities (August to April), the Parks and Facilities Operator II will perform ice making, marking, surfacing, plant checks, and maintenance duties in a Township of Springwater ice facility, as well as provide assistance in the maintenance of Township of Springwater facilities, community halls, sports fields, parks, skateboard parks, spray pad and horticulture; as well as providing direction and responding to general complaints.

Position Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the position are:

  • Perform general cleaning/maintenance (i.e. mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, window cleaning, washroom/dressing room cleaning, snow shoveling, garbage pick-up, painting, waxing floors, scrubbing walls, etc.) in accordance with the daily and seasonal schedule;
  • Responsible for preventative maintenance, equipment checks, annual maintenance and minor repair as assigned (i.e. minor plumbing, re-lamping of light fixtures, changing ceiling tiles, fix rubber floor, rink boards and gates, replace broken rink glass, check fire extinguisher, blade changes etc.) with minimal supervision;
  • Assist with the set-up and clean-up of special functions and bookings in Township facilities, parks and open spaces.
  • Participate and perform facility program and maintenance activities as required.
  • Perform parks maintenance on sports field, such as ball diamonds, tennis courts, and soccer fields. Coordinate’s cleaning of public change rooms within Park’s facilities;
  • Perform horticultural work, grass cutting, playground site checks and turf maintenance including tree maintenance and removal as necessary;
  • Respond to requests from patrons (general public) and other Township staff on general facility and parks issues and/or maintenance requests;
  • Respond to customer needs in a timely, professional, helpful and courteous manner and follow-up to ensure their needs have been met and consistently meet service standards;
  • Promote a safety conscious working environment. Notice potentially hazardous situations, consistently enforce safety procedures and demand compliance with health and safety regulations with part time staff and contractors; and
  • Maintain facility quality and safety by adhering to predetermined safe operating procedures and policies.
Qualifications and Experience

  • Ability and experience with various types of equipment, including grass cutters/tractors, chainsaws, ¼ to 2 ton trucks, weed trimmers, ice re-surfacers, ice edger’s, loaders, ball diamond groomers, small tools, vacuums, skill saws, drills, grinders, rental equipment, etc.
  • A minimum of Basic Arena Refrigeration certificate.

  • A Valid Class “G” driver’s license in good standing with a satisfactory driving record and ability to acquire a Class “A” restricted license.
  • Must be available to workdays, afternoons, late evenings, weekends and statutory holidays; availability to work on a call-in, as needed basis is also required.
  • Must hold a current Standard First Aid and CPR certificate with Automatic External Defibrillator Certification.
  • As a condition of employment, the successful candidate(s) must pass a Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Rate of Pay

Compensation for this position is $30.16 per hour (2026 rate) as per the Collective Agreement, with the option for participation in the OMERS pension plan.

Hours of Work

This position will work 40 regularly scheduled weekly hours from April through December and 20 regularly scheduled weekly hours from December to March. This position will be required to work a variable work shift including early mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.
