Job summary

The First Cook plays a vital role in our communities, impacting residents' lives and fostering human connection.

This is a Temporary Full-Time position, offering 75 hours biweekly.

Term: 3 months or until the incumbent returns, whichever comes first.

Schedule
  • Sun 11:00am-7:00pm
  • Mon OFF
  • Tues OFF
  • Wed 11:00am-7:00pm
  • Thurs 11:00am-7:00pm
  • Fri 11:00am-7:00pm
  • Sat 11:00am-7:00pm

Wage leveling rate of pay is $27.75 per hour. Once wage leveling ends, the pay rate will reflect the collective agreement pay rates.

Responsibilities
  • Visually inspect, select, and use only the freshest ingredients for all menu items.
  • Prepare food using quality methods based on seasonal menus.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in scratch cooking, teaching and coaching others.
  • Ensure meals are at appropriate temperatures, attractively presented, and properly portioned.
  • Monitor storage, receiving, and rotation of food to comply with health regulations.
  • In the absence of the Executive Chef, oversee routine operations, manage menu changes, requisition supplies, and maintain records.
  • Direct Second Cooks and Stewards in food prep and plating, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Follow policies on sanitation, safety, and quality assurance; complete all necessary documentation.
  • Assist with cleaning duties and quarterly inventory counts, following FIFO.
  • Support orientation and training of kitchen staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in hospitality or seniors living sector.
  • Red Seal or recognized culinary diploma.
  • Valid Safe Food Handling Certificate.
  • Good public relations and communication skills.
  • Experience with large quantity food, catering, and special events.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel is an asset.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work flexible hours including mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Effective verbal and written English skills.
  • Successful passing of Criminal Records Check.
