Job summary

City of Brampton Fire and Emergency Services is hiring firefighters at Brampton Fire and Emergency Services Headquarters. You will respond to emergencies, suppress fires, perform rescues, and provide medical aid while delivering public safety education.

This role features a 42-hour week and rapid career progression. Starting salary of CAD 74,096 per annum with benefits including the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Plan; extensive certifications are required and the city supports ongoing

Qualifications

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent.
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II and NFPA 1072 certifications or equivalent.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR C certification.
  • Full Ontario Class D driver’s license with Z endorsement.
  • Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Completion of Ontario Fire Administration Candidate Testing Program Stage 2.
  • York University Firefighter Fitness Testing completion.
  • NFPA 1006 Rescue certifications or equivalent.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English; safe swimming ability.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergencies when called and combat fires.
  • Perform rescue operations and provide medical assistance.
  • Maintain firefighting equipment and department property.
  • Conduct public fire safety education and inspections for hazards.
  • Operate modern apparatus and participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Engage with the community as a safety ambassador and participate in events.
  • Work rotating 24-hour shifts, including nights and holidays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent.
  • Minimum of 18 years of age or older
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter I & II and NFPA 1072 (NFPA 472) Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations certifications or equivalent as recognized by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) (must have proof of Pro Board or IFSAC).
  • Possess a valid and current Standard First Aid and CPR "C" certification
  • Possess a valid and unrestricted Ontario Class “D” driver’s license with a “Z” endorsement or equivalent (deemed equivalent by Ontario Ministry of Transportation) and a driving record that is acceptable to the City of Brampton.
  • Provide a satisfactory Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Completion of the Ontario Fire Administration Candidate Testing Program Stage 2

OR

  • Completion of the York University Firefighter Fitness Testing
  • NFPA 1006 Certified in Surface Water Rescue – Level II (2013 Standard) or Operations Level (2021 Standard)

OR

  • Completion of OFAI Swim Test (as verified by possession of a current and valid certificate)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, with the ability to convey information clearly, accurately, and professionally across a variety of situations and audiences.
  • Ability to work rotating 24-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, statutory holidays, and other scheduled shift assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to swim proficiently and successfully complete the required swim assessment.
  • Candidates must meet the vision requirements established by NFPA 1582
  • Demonstrated ability to safely perform the intense and sustained physical activities associated with firefighting, including working in physically demanding and stressful environments.
  • The ability to attain certifications within 18 months from the date a conditional offer of employment

  • Minimum of one year of previous experience as a volunteer, part-time, or full-time firefighter.
  • Minimum of one year of previous experience in an emergency services environment other than fire suppression.
  • Minimum of one year of experience operating large or heavy vehicles and/or heavy machinery.
  • Minimum of one year of experience as an elevator technician, fire alarm technician, fire and life safety
  • technician, member of the military, or member of the Canadian Coast Guard.
  • National Lifeguard Certification: Possession of a current National Lifeguard (NL) certification.
  • Occupational Health and Safety: Completion of occupational health and safety training or certification, such as Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Part 1 and Part 2 certification.
  • Possession of a current Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification.
  • Previous experience, training, and/or (Operations or Technician) certification in technical rescue disciplines, including water, ice, trench, rope, or confined space rescue, consistent with the competencies identified in NFPA 1006.
  • Previous experience in hazardous materials removal, environmental remediation, or private-sector disaster management, including chemical spills, environmental clean-up, mould, asbestos, biohazard, or contamination remediation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities (race, culture, ability, mental health, sexual orientation, faith, gender identity and all diverse identities)
