Duties And Responsibilities
Understanding the expectations of the role, is imperative for success. Listed below are some of the key responsibilities:
- Respond to fire alarms and other calls for assistance, such as automobile and industrial accidents, bomb threats and other emergencies
- Rescue victims from burning buildings and accident sites
- Control and extinguish fires using manual and power equipment, such as axes, water hoses, aerial ladders and hydraulic equipment and various firefighting chemicals
- Administer first aid and other assistance
- Ensure proper operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment
- Prepare written reports on fire incidents
- Inform and educate the public on fire prevention & life safety initiatives
- Train to maintain high level of physical fitness
- Assist the public, the police and emergency organizations during times of major disasters
- May participate as members of a trauma or emergency response team and provide medical aid to accident victims or ill persons
- May coordinate the work of other firefighters
- May conduct building inspections to ensure compliance with fire code.
- Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Corporate Policies and Procedures, Fire Service Operational Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures as well as established industry guidelines.
Skills And Qualifications
To be considered for this permanent full-time opportunity, candidates must have the following training, experience, and abilities:
- Possess a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter I & II credentials. Certification is required prior to the date of application submission (must have proof of Pro Board or IFSAC)
- Must possess either NFPA 472 or NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certification (proof of Pro Board or IFSAC required)
- Or be recognized as a legacy Firefighter in the Province of Ontario in lieu NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2, NFPA (proof of recognition required prior to the date of application submission)
- Successful completion of but not limited to: a written test, practical assessments, performance assessments, swimming test, cognitive assessments, and York University Firefighter fitness assessment (scheduled by the Town of Caledon)
- Successful completion of behaviour/competency-based interviews.
- Satisfactory passing of a Level 3 Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Valid and unrestricted Ontario DZ driver’s license in good standing with no more than 3 demerit points.
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent. This position requires applicants with international credentials to provide a recognized credential evaluation report as part of the application process.
- Minimum of 18 years of age at time of application.
- Possess a valid and current Standard First Aid and CPR "C" certification
- Effective English communication skills and ability to communicate clearly and precisely in multiple situations.
- Superior interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow direction.
- Demonstrate analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to make critical decisions quickly.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Comfortable working at heights and enclosed spaces.
Additional Information
Preference will be given to candidates who are currently an active firefighter or a volunteer firefighter. Candidates with previous full-time experience will start at their previous classification/rank, up to and including First Class.
All required documentation and testing is to be provided at the candidates' expense. The Town will not reimburse any candidate for testing, successful or otherwise, as part of this recruitment process.
