Fire Protection Estimator-Onyx Sprinkler Projects

Onyx Fire Protection is rapidly expanding, and we are looking for an ambitious, driven, hard working individual to join our estimating team as a Fire Protection Sprinkler Estimator.

Onyx Sprinkler Projects is a reputable and established Fire Protection company dedicated to providing high-quality Fire Lifesafety systems and services to our clients. With a strong focus on safety and customer satisfaction, we pride ourselves on delivering innovative solutions that meet and exceed industry standards. We are seeking a skilled and experienced Sprinkler Estimator to join our team and contribute to our continued success.

The Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates for fire protection system installations and upgrades, conducting material takeoffs, collaborating with sales, design, and project management teams, and ensuring all estimates align with applicable codes and industry standards. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to meeting deadlines.

Responsibilities
  • Review drawings, specifications, and project documents to develop accurate sprinkler/fire alarm system estimates.
  • Perform bid layouts, material takeoffs, and basic calculations.
  • Obtain and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing.
  • Prepare and write detailed quotes and cost proposals.
  • Conduct on‑site visits to gather project information as needed.
  • Interpret and apply NFPA, IBC, IFC, and related fire protection codes.
  • Create alarm and suppression layouts when required.
  • Identify potential risks affecting project cost, scope, or timeline.
  • Assist other estimators and collaborate with sales, operations, and design teams to interpret project requirements.
  • Ensure estimates are completed accurately and submitted by fixed deadlines.
  • Create and submit permit applications.
  • Participate in bid strategy and planning meetings.
  • Provide timely and accurate data entry into operating systems; update Compass regularly.
  • Support project managers during the project lifecycle, including cost tracking and change order coordination.
  • Produce status reports as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies, safety regulations, and confidentiality standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience designing or estimating fire alarm or sprinkler systems is an asset
  • Project Management or Design experience welcomed
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply relevant codes, drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Strong math, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management abilities with proven success meeting deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Valid G2 or G driver’s license; ability to travel locally for site visits.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and safe work practices.
  • 2+ years estimating fire alarm, sprinkler, suppression is an asset
  • NICET certifications in Fire Alarm or Special Hazard Suppression Systems is an asset
