Job summary

A leading engineering firm is seeking a Senior Fire Protection Engineer to support the Pickering Safe Storage Project. This role involves ensuring compliance with fire protection regulations for nuclear facilities, conducting fire hazard assessments, and providing technical guidance. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, strong knowledge of fire protection engineering principles, and experience with regulatory documentation. The position is based in Pickering, Ontario, offering an opportunity to work in a critical safety environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent education and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of fire protection engineering in regulated environments.
  • Experience with Fire Safe Shutdown Assessments.
  • Familiarity with National Building Code of Canada and National Fire Code of Canada.
  • CSA N293 and related standards knowledge.
  • Knowledge of nuclear regulatory requirements and licensing frameworks applicable to fire protection systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear, concise technical reports and recommendations.
  • Ability to provide authoritative technical guidance and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct fire hazard assessments and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare technical documentation and respond to regulatory inquiries.
  • Evaluate fire protection systems and equipment operational status.
  • Review technical proposals from internal and external sources; provide recommendations, revisions, and written dispositions for management approval.
  • Prepare or contribute to technical specifications for procurement of materials, services, and equipment; provide technical support during installation and implementation.
  • Ensure compliance with site license conditions and regulatory requirements related to CSA N293, CSA N393, NFPA codes, and associated fire protection standards.
  • Provide expert guidance to management and fire protection staff.
  • Conduct Fire Safe Shutdown Assessments.
  • Develop fire response plans for postulated fire scenarios in accordance with the plant safety report and licensing basis.
  • Maintain an ongoing review process to identify increases in fire risk due to equipment, training, staffing, or procedural changes, and modify fire response protocols as required.
  • Liaise with site department managers to identify fire protection support needs and develop service delivery solutions to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Prepare and support CNSC correspondence, ensuring recommendations, action notices, and directives are addressed with appropriate corrective action plans.
  • Coordinate with internal and external fire protection organizations and emergency response agencies.

Overview

The Senior Fire Protection Engineer will provide specialized engineering and technical expertise in support of the Pickering Safe Storage Project. This role supports the commissioning, operation, and maintenance of nuclear facilities by ensuring fire protection systems, programs, and processes comply with regulatory, licensing, and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical evaluations, analysis, and engineering advice across multiple work areas supporting facility commissioning, operation, and maintenance.
  • Identify technical issues, risks, and opportunities for improvement within assigned systems or programs, initiating studies or investigations as required.
  • Prepare technical reports and documentation in response to regulatory inquiries, external requests, and internal reviews.
  • Review technical proposals from internal and external sources; provide recommendations, revisions, and written dispositions for management approval.
  • Prepare or contribute to technical specifications for procurement of materials, services, and equipment; provide technical support during installation and implementation.
  • Ensure compliance with site license conditions and regulatory requirements related to CSA N293, CSA N393, NFPA codes, and associated fire protection standards.
  • Provide expert guidance to management and fire protection staff.

  • Support the development and updating of standards, procedures, instructions, and guidance documents to maintain regulatory and licensing compliance.
  • Assist the Section Manager, Fire Protection Programs as needed.
