Job summary

The Fire Prevention Officer/Firefighter in Russell Township provides fire safety code compliance services, inspections, and public education on fire safety. The role includes developing and implementing a municipal inspection program, investigating fire causes, and supporting the volunteer public education division.

It also functions as an on-call firefighter responding to emergencies. Qualifications include 5+ years in fire service, NFPA 1001 L1/L2, NFPA 1072/472 Ops, NFPA 1031/1035/1033

Qualifications

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent with 5+ years in the fire service.
  • NFPA 1001 L1 & L2 and NFPA 1072/472 Ops level; OFM grandfathering accepted.
  • Must become NFPA 1031 Inspector II, NFPA 1035 Educator II, NFPA 1033 Investigator.
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I or higher; grandfathering accepted for Level II.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence; willingness to obtain DZ.
  • First Responder BLS; ability to provide medical certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Provide fire safety code compliance inspections and enforce standards.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate a municipal inspection program.
  • Deliver public fire safety education programs to the community.
  • Investigate fire causes and cooperate with the volunteer education division.
  • Respond to emergencies as an operational firefighter.

Job description

Under the direction of the Fire Chief, the Fire Prevention Officer/Firefighter (FPO/FF) is responsible for providing fire safety code compliance services, inspections, public education on fire safety, development and implementation of a municipal inspection program and to investigate and determine fire cause. The FPO/FF will also assist and cooperate with the volunteer public education division team by developing, delivering, and evaluating public education programs throughout the community and provide fire public education training to various client groups. In addition, the FPO/FF will also be an operational firefighter responding to emergencies.

Qualifications, Skills, Competencies and Knowledge:
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent AND a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the fire
  • Possess NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 1 & 2 and NFPA 1072 or 472 Operations level. OFM "Grandfathering" will be accepted in lieu of IFSAC/Pro Board seals.
  • Must become qualified as an NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector II, NFPA 1035 Public Fire and Life Safety Educator Level II, and NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator.
  • NFPA 1002 Pump Ops Standard for Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications, Chapter 5 Apparatus Equipped with Fire Pump or willingness to attain IFSAC/Pro Board seals or meets Reg. 343/22: Firefighter Certification.
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I or willingness to attain, and willing to progress through to acquiring Level II. OFM "Grandfathering" will be accepted in lieu of IFSAC/Pro Board seals.
  • Successfully complete Russell Township Firefighter Physical
  • Must be willing to take required training courses which may be off site and outside of the Township.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computer software including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Possess and maintain, in good standing, a minimum Class "G" Driver's Licence for the Province of Ontario with an acceptable driver's abstract; willingness to obtain "DZ" Licence.
  • Possess First Responder BLS
  • Ability to provide a vulnerable sector
  • Provide a Medical Certificate - to be completed by Applicant's Doctor.
Language Requirements

Excellent proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in either French or English. Proficiency in the second official language a strong asset.

Compensation

The salary is based on 40 hours a week and is set between $86,986 and $108,493 per year and must be available to be on an on-call rotation. The offer includes an excellent benefits package, a pension plan, as well as free access to the Sports Dome Training Centre.
