Summary of Position:

As a self-motivated member of the Fire Prevention Division, your primary responsibilities will be conducting fire code inspections, enforcing and ensuring compliance with legislation, codes, and standards, public education and; where necessary, initiating or assist in the prosecution process. Other integral components of this position include conducting origin and cause fire investigations while on duty, and to be available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week on a rotation basis, liaising with municipal and provincial agencies, report writing, collection of fire statistics and data. The performance of inspections and fire investigations can be physically demanding and they may be conducted under adverse environmental conditions. As a superior communicator with strong interpersonal skills, you will provide advice and direction to businesses, community, and stakeholder groups as well as the local media. The Fire Prevention Inspector plays a key role in preventing fire related incidents while enhancing public safety and quality of life within the community.

Work Performed:
  • Performs fire and life safety related inspections on all properties as required by the London Fire Department Standard Operational Guidelines and official codes and issues the appropriate orders and compliance directives to owners or occupants to rectify violations as necessary.
  • Performs re-inspections as necessary to ensure compliance with required orders and directives.
  • Examines /reviews, plans and related programs for compliance to relevant codes and standards.
  • Attends and successfully completes London Fire Services’ Staff Development Program initiatives such as educational courses, training programs and skill maintenance workshops and seminars as directed by the Fire Chief.
  • Prepares for and conducts lectures / presentations and performs other public relations and public education functions relating to fire, life safety and injury prevention for various groups as assigned.
  • In consultation with the Chief Fire Prevention Officer and the Public Information Coordinator, communicates with the media regarding safety issues and initiatives and public relations activities as required.
  • While on duty, when assigned to “stand by duty” or when recalled to duty, attends and investigates fire scenes to determine origin and cause and prepares comprehensive investigative reports as required.
  • Investigates fire and life safety complaints and concerns from clients and customers and initiates appropriate follow-up and actions as required.
  • Work in a safe manner in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Standard Operating Procedures, Standard Operating Guidelines and other relevant legislation
  • Provides technical support, advice, familiarization instruction and orientation associated with the Fire Prevention Division’s area of responsibility for Fire Services personnel as assigned.
  • Attends meetings and official proceedings and provides information and evidence as required.
  • Have sound judgment with the ability to competently represent the London Fire Department as a professional
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Experience:

Successful completion of a diploma or certification related to fire prevention inspection, completed an applicable NFPA program and/or certification from the Ontario Fire College, and a good working knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code, and other applicable legislation and regulations.

Specialized Training & Licenses:
  • Knowledge of building construction and computer proficiency is a definite asset.
  • Possess strong report writing skills, are able to maintain detailed records and analyze and interpret statistical data, and have demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Show a proven ongoing dedication to outstanding customer service, public safety, and continued professional development.
  • The applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Training would be considered an asset:
    • NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I or equivalent
    • NFPA 1035 Public Fire & Life Safety Education l or equivalent
    • NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator or equivalent
  • On application, must possess a valid Ontario G class driver’s licence or equivalent that is acceptable to the City, noting that you will be required to obtain a provincial licence within 90 days.
  • Successful candidates must be capable of performing all administrative and physical components of the position.
  • This position also requires that the successful candidates be available to work on rotation ‘on-call’ schedule (be available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week) and be able to wear self-contained breathing apparatus, bunker gear, structural firefighting boots and a helmet for a prolong period of time when conducting fire investigations
Compensation & Other Information

Starting rates will range between 70% and 117% of a 1st Class Firefighter salary, which is dependent upon experience, education, and level of certification. (70% of a 1st Class Firefighter Salary $76,862)
