Job summary

The Township of Langley is seeking a regular full-time Fire Prevention Inspector to enforce fire prevention codes and bylaws. You will inspect public and private buildings, issue orders for non-compliance, and advise owners and the public on life safety.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 with firefighting/training in fire protection technologies or equivalent.
  • Post-secondary degree or designation related to fire service and NFPA/BOABC certifications considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of BC Fire Code and BC Building Code.

Pay Rate: $46.09 - $69.79 per hour (2026 rates), plus benefits

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week; Hours of work are per the Collective Agreement

The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a regular full-time Fire Prevention Inspector in the Fire Division. Reporting to the Fire Prevention Officer(s), this position is accountable for specialized inspectional work in the enforcement of municipal, provincial and federal fire prevention codes, bylaws and statutes. This position inspects all types of public and private buildings, issues orders and tickets for non-compliance, and provides fire prevention advice to property owners, occupants and the public.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to complaints, identify deficiencies and liaise with other regulatory agencies on issues exceeding the Township’s jurisdiction
  • Review and accept Fire Safety/Construction Fire Safety plans for compliance with BC Fire Codes and other applicable standards
  • Evaluate and recommend acceptance of code, standard, and regulatory equivalencies for specific circumstances
  • Participate in the delivery of fire and life safety education programs, talks, seminars and demonstrations to employees, the public and other groups
  • Develop pre-incident fire plans for use by fire suppression crews and use computer software to prepare and update floor plans and site drawings
  • Compile data pertaining to building features such as size, framing materials, and personnel hazards
  • Assist Fire Prevention Officers to investigate cause and origin of fires as required
  • Perform related work as required
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
  • Sound knowledge of fire prevention, inspection, and investigation methods, bylaws, codes, and regulations
  • Sound knowledge of building construction, structural and mechanical systems, wiring, industrial processes, chemical reactions, and flammable and combustible materials
  • Ability to build effective working relationships and promote cooperation in fire prevention and life safety matters.
  • Ability to maintain a high standard of professionalism, integrity, reliability and credibility is essential in this role
  • Ability to prepare a variety of records, reports, correspondence, and presentation materials related to the work
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work tactfully and professionally with property owners, the public, professionals, and stakeholders
  • Established PC skills and experience in using relevant software applications (Microsoft Office, Outlook, PowerPoint, FDM, & Tempest)
Desirable Training, Qualifications and Experience
  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by training in firefighting and/or fire protection technologies, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Post-secondary degree or other designation related to the fire service and certifications in NFPA 1031, NFPA 1033, NFPA 1035, Fire Service Instructor, Plan Checking, B.C. Building Code - Part 3, FireSmart BC Local Representative, BC Fire Code, Automatic Sprinkler and Standpipe Testing or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the BC Fire Code and BC Building Code
  • Provincial certificate in Building Trades Qualification or Building Official with the Building Officials' Association of British Columbia (BOABC) Level 2 or Level 3 is considered an asset
  • Airbrake endorsement is considered an asset.
Required Licenses/Certificates (attach all required documents with your application)
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License or valid Driver's License for where you reside. You must include with your application a current Personal Driving Record (select the 5-year option if obtaining online) that has been obtained within 6 months of the closing date of this competition. To obtain a copy of your Personal Driving Record, please contact ICBC directly. Please note that a copy of your Driver's License or the Driver Factor Report will not be accepted.

The Fire Department has a residency requirement, where the boundaries include the western border of West Vancouver, Metro Vancouver municipalities to the North, the U.S. border to the South, and the eastern borders of Mission and Chilliwack.

This position is defined by the Township of Langley as a position of trust. The successful candidate will be required to have a Police Information Check as a condition of employment (not required at the time of the initial application).
