Job summary

City of Brantford seeks a Fire Prevention Officer to enforce fire safety, inspect premises, and educate the public along the Grand River corridor. Reporting to the Chief Fire Prevention Officer, you will conduct routine inspections, investigate incidents, and support bylaw and provincial act enforcement in a hybrid work environment.

The role requires strong knowledge of fire prevention, ability to read construction plans, and certifications such as NFPA 1031, NFPA 472 or 1071, NFPA 1035.

Qualifications

• Completed secondary school or equivalent.
• Ontario Driver's License in good standing.
• Experience in fire behaviour, cause determination and fire suppression.
• Knowledge of building construction, fire alarm systems and devices, codes and sprinklers.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans.
• Must read/write English.
• Familiar with Brantford area and fire safety education.
• Commitment to ongoing training and lifelong learning.
• Demonstrated conflict resolution skills.
• Police Vulnerable Sector Check within the last 3 months.
• NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level I & II, NFPA 472 or 1071 Hazardous Materials Awareness, NFPA 1035 Public Educator Level I.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief Fire Prevention Officer, the Fire Prevention Officer will be responsible for but not limited to carrying out routine fire prevention inspections; completing reports; making recommendations to improve fire safety; enforcing Municipal Bylaws, Federal and Provincial Acts, and other relevant Acts and Legislation in respect to Fire Prevention, Investigation and Public Education. The Fire Prevention Officer will also conduct investigations of fire scenes to determine the cause and origin of the fire; act as an assistant to the Fire Marshal as per Provincial Regulations; co-operate with other civic and provincial officials in matters pertaining to fire safety; participate in Fire Prevention education activities; and instruct the public in the hazards and prevention of Fire.

Qualifications

• Completed secondary school and/or have the equivalency recognized by the Ministry of Education, supplemented with relevant education courses.
• Must have a valid Ontario Driver's License in good standing during the course of employment.
• Experience involving fire behaviour; cause determination; and fire suppression is required.
• Knowledge of building construction, fire alarm systems and devices; building codes; fire codes; regulating bylaws; sprinkler, standpipe and water supply systems; and the knowledge of the general properties of flammable and combustible liquids.
• The successful candidate must have the ability to read and interpret construction plans.
• The ability to understand, communicate, respond to, read and write the English language is also required.
• The successful applicant will be familiar with Brantford and the surrounding area, committed to the education of citizens in fire and life safety, able to function in close proximity to others harmoniously, and work in extreme environmental situations which may cause mental and physical stress.
• Commitment to on-going job related training and personal development on and off duty when required and to life long learning is essential.
• Demonstrated conflict resolution skills are also required.
• As a condition of employment, applicants must submit a current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (dated within the past 3 months) from their local police service for approval by the Corporation prior to commencing employment.

Salary

This position has an annual salary range of $73,920.00 (55% of 1st Class Fire Fighter Rate) to $123,200.00 (100% of 1st Class Fire Fighter Rate) (2026 rates). External candidates: remuneration will be based on the applicant's experience and qualifications, as determined by the Fire Chief.
