Job description

Paradise Dock & Lift Inc. is a growing Canadian manufacturer of premium aluminum docks and hydraulic boat lifts. Based in Vernon, British Columbia, we design, manufacture, sell, install, and service our products throughout Canada and the United States.

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Financial Controller to take ownership of the company’s accounting and financial function.

Position Overview

This is a hands-on Controller role within a growing, owner-managed business. The successful candidate will be responsible for both day-to-day accounting and higher-level financial management.

The Controller will personally handle core accounting functions including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, month-end closing, government remittances, financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow, and inventory accounting.

We are looking for a CPA who is comfortable working independently, taking ownership of the financial function, and moving between routine accounting tasks and financial analysis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and customer collections
  • Complete bank, credit card, loan, and general ledger reconciliations
  • Record journal entries and maintain accurate accounting records
  • Complete monthly and year-end close
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports
  • Maintain the general ledger and review balance sheet accounts
  • Prepare cash flow forecasts and monitor working capital
  • Analyze financial performance against budgets and prior periods
  • Maintain appropriate internal controls and approval procedures
Manufacturing & Inventory Accounting
  • Oversee inventory accounting and reconciliations
  • Review product costs, work-in-progress, manufacturing costs, and margins
  • Assist with job costing and product profitability analysis
  • Investigate inventory and costing discrepancies
  • Work with production and purchasing to improve inventory accuracy
Budgeting & Compliance
  • Lead annual budgeting and forecasting
  • Prepare GST, PST, payroll, and other government remittances
  • Coordinate year-end financial statements and corporate tax requirements with external accountants
  • Prepare supporting schedules and documentation
  • Communicate with banks, accountants, insurers, and government agencies as required
Systems & Process Improvement
  • Improve accounting procedures, controls, and workflows
  • Support and improve the use of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central
  • Develop useful financial reports, dashboards, and KPIs
  • Document accounting processes and ensure procedures are followed
  • Assist ownership and management with financial and operational projects
Qualifications
  • Minimum five years of progressive accounting experience
  • Experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, or similar role
  • Hands-on experience with payroll, AP, AR, reconciliations, and month-end closing
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow management, and internal controls
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central experience is strongly preferred
  • Manufacturing, inventory accounting, job costing, or product costing experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience in a small or owner-managed business is an asset
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • High attention to detail and ability to work independently
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a practical accounting professional who takes ownership and follows issues through to completion.

They are equally comfortable processing payroll or a vendor invoice, reconciling an account, reviewing inventory costs, preparing financial statements, and providing management with meaningful financial analysis.

This position is best suited to someone who enjoys being directly involved in the accounting function rather than simply overseeing it.

What We Offer
  • Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications
  • Potential performance-based annual bonus
  • Extended health and benefits package
  • Direct involvement with ownership and senior management
  • Opportunity to take ownership of and improve the company’s accounting function
