Qualifications

  • CPA designation is required.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
  • Strong IFRS and ASPE knowledge.

  • Advanced Excel skills.

Job description

Salary: CAD110000 - CAD130000 per annum

We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, and strategic Financial Controller to lead and oversee the company’s accounting and financial reporting functions. Reporting to the VP, Finance, the Financial Controller will provide leadership across the accounting function, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, effective financial controls, timely month-end and year-end close processes, and compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulations.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on financial leader with strong technical accounting expertise, analytical capabilities, and a proven ability to lead and develop an accounting team. The Financial Controller will partner closely with senior leadership on financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, cash flow management, financial analysis, process improvements, and broader business initiatives.

This is a full-time, in-office position in Downtown Toronto, conveniently located near King and Union Station. CPA designation is required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee the accounting and finance function, including Accounts Payable, Intermediate Accountant, and Senior Accountant responsibilities.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and support to the accounting team while ensuring accurate and timely completion of all accounting activities.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, management reports, and financial analysis.
  • Own and manage the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring all reporting deadlines are consistently achieved.
  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of the company’s financial records and reporting.
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax regulations, and company policies, including IFRS and ASPE.
  • Review and oversee balance sheet reconciliations, including bank accounts, credit cards, prepaid expenses, accruals, and other key accounts, ensuring discrepancies are identified and resolved promptly.
  • Prepare and file monthly HST remittances and ensure ongoing compliance with applicable tax requirements.
  • Lead and coordinate the annual audit process and act as a key point of contact for external auditors.
  • Oversee the preparation of annual budgets, financial forecasts, and financial models in partnership with senior leadership.
  • Analyze financial performance, trends, and variances and provide meaningful insights and recommendations to support strategic business decisions.
  • Lead cash flow forecasting and support the company’s overall cash management and financial planning objectives.
  • Monitor cash requirements, working capital, and client account reconciliations to ensure effective management of the company’s financial resources.
  • Partner with the VP, Finance and other business leaders to provide accurate, timely, and actionable financial information.
  • Identify and implement process improvements, system enhancements, and automation opportunities to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability within the finance function.
  • Oversee and optimize the use of key financial and business systems, including the Unity billing platform, Salesforce, and Dimensions general ledger.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop accounting team members through ongoing guidance, performance management, and professional development.
  • Establish a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and operational excellence across the accounting function.
  • Participate in strategic, financial, accounting, and operational projects and provide financial expertise as required.
  • Act as a trusted financial partner to senior leadership and contribute to broader organizational planning and decision-making.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, ideally with previous Financial Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting requirements, including IFRS and ASPE.
  • Proven experience overseeing full-cycle accounting, month-end and year-end close, and financial statement preparation.
  • Strong knowledge of internal controls, reconciliations, audit processes, and financial compliance.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis.
  • Proven experience supervising, mentoring, and developing accounting professionals.
  • Experience working with ERP systems, general ledgers, billing platforms, and accounting software.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to analyze and interpret complex financial data.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively present financial information to senior leadership.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively within a collaborative leadership team.
  • Demonstrates strong ownership, accountability, initiative, and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving financial and operational issues.
