Job description

Continental Group is Alberta’s premier electric motor rewind, repair, and distribution operation. Continental’s full-service motor facilities have the capability to repair the largest equipment in Western Canada. Continental also distributes and supports many of the leading industrial motor brands for Canada’s industrial market. We are a proud Alberta-based business with locations in both Calgary and Edmonton but we’re also part of the larger Madison Industrial Group of Companies.

SUMMARY

The position will be based out of either Edmonton or Calgary and regular travel between these locations will be required. The Controller will lead the finance and accounting functions for the two locations under the Continental Electric Motor Services brand. Reporting directly to Continental’s President, working closely with each location’s leadership and the Madison Industrial Group’s Director of Finance, this is a hands-on position where you will oversee all accounting and finance functions.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership :

  • Providing both strategic and tactical analysis, insight and projection in conjunction with senior management.
  • Participate in monthly senior leadership meetings.
  • Participation in the Company’s annual planning and budgeting process specifically responsible for preparation of the Company’s budgeted financial results.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the accounting team.

Accounting & Reporting :

  • Preparation of complete, accurate and timely monthly financial and operating metrics package for both Edmonton and Calgary.
  • Preparation and analysis of key performance indicators (KPIs) for operating management.
  • Overseeing all day-to-day accounting tasks for two locations, including but not limited to :

Payroll and benefits

  • Accounts receivable and accounts payable functions
  • Ensure the completion of the year end close process, including :

Coordination with the company’s auditors

  • Preparation of working papers and account reconciliations
  • Preparation and completion of inventory counts
  • Developing and preparing financial and operational KPIs, reports and analysis.
  • Assisting with the management of the tax function including filing GST returns, and coordination with external advisers for Canadian corporate tax filing requirements.
  • Developing and improving internal controls and accounting processes.
  • Margining calculations and cash flow projections for all banking arrangements.
  • Maintaining the company’s accounting software application, Motorbase.
  • Performing other duties as necessary.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship and support for direct reports.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing team.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that empowers employees to deliver exceptional results.

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post Secondary degree in finance related discipline.
  • Thorough knowledge of Accounting Standards for Private Enterprise (ASPE).
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment is an asset.
