Stewart McKelvey in Halifax, NS is seeking a Financial Accountant to join our Finance team. This role supports month-end close, reconciliations, and financial reporting with a focus on accuracy and controls.

Qualifications

• Post‑secondary education in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
• Minimum of 2–3 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in legal or professional services.
• Strong Excel and financial systems skills for reporting and analysis.
• Attention to detail, organization, and ability to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Support the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries and documentation.
• Own reconciliation and analysis of general ledger accounts and variances.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting and variance analysis.
• Perform bank reconciliations and related analyses.
• Maintain vendor records and support financial controls and data integrity.
• Contribute to annual financial statement audits with schedules and reconciliations.
• Assist in Finance process improvement and cross‑department projects.

We are currently seeking a Financial Accountant to join our Finance team based in the Firm’s Halifax, NS office.

Type of Position: Full-Time, Permanent

Close Date: November 3, 2026

The Opportunity:

• Support the month-end and year-end close processes, including preparing and posting journal entries and maintaining supporting documentation.


• Own the reconciliation and analysis of assigned general ledger accounts, investigating variances and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information.


• Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting, including actual-to-budget analysis and identification of key variances.


• Perform bank reconciliations and related analysis, proactively investigating and resolving outstanding items.


• Support strong financial controls and data integrity through the review and maintenance of vendor information and other key financial records.


• Play an active role in the annual financial statement audit, preparing schedules, reconciliations, supporting documentation, and responding to audit requests.


• Contribute to the modernization and continuous improvement of Finance processes, reporting, and controls, identifying opportunities to enhance accuracy, consistency, and effectiveness.


• Participate in Finance projects and initiatives and provide accounting and reporting support across the department as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

• Post‑secondary education in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


• Minimum of 2–3 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably within a legal or other professional services environment.;


• Strong Microsoft Excel and financial systems skills, with an interest in using technology to improve processes and reporting.


• Strong accounting knowledge and analytical skills, including experience with reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting and variance analysis.


• Strong attention to detail, organization, and business acumen, with the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines.
