Job summary

Nee Tahi Buhn First Nation in Burns Lake, BC, is seeking a Finance Manager to provide hands-on and strategic financial leadership. You will strengthen budgeting, reporting, audit readiness, internal controls, and financial administration practices across the organization, coordinating with the General Manager and Chief and Council.

This full-time, permanent position requires a degree in accounting or finance, at least five years of progressive finance experience, and two years of leadership.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, business administration or related field.
• Minimum of five years of progressive finance and accounting experience.
• Minimum of two years of leadership or supervisory experience.
• Experience with budgeting, cash flow forecasting, asset management, audit prep.
• Strong knowledge of financial reporting, variance analysis, reconciliations.
• Proficiency in MS Excel, data analysis and systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead annual and long-term budgeting, financial planning, forecasting and cash flow management.
• Prepare clear and timely financial reports, variance analyses, dashboards and briefing materials.
• Provide practical financial advice to support responsible decision-making and accountability.
• Oversee day-to-day finance operations: A/P, A/R, payroll, reconciliations and GL.
• Strengthen internal controls, approval processes, documentation, policies.
• Monitor funding agreements, reporting deadlines, eligible expenditures and compliance.
• Support funding applications, budgets, claims and related documents.
• Lead audit preparation, year-end close, working papers and auditor responses.
• Identify financial risks and remediation actions; propose solutions.
• Supervise and coach finance staff; plan work and performance.
• Build financial understanding across the organization for budgeting and funding rules.

Overview of the Role

The Finance Manager provides hands-on and strategic financial leadership for Nee Tahi Buhn Indian Band. This role is responsible for strengthening financial planning, budgeting, reporting, audit readiness, internal controls and financial administration practices across the organization. Working closely with the General Manager, Chief and Council, managers, employees, funders, auditors and external advisors, the Finance Manager will help establish clear financial processes, support responsible decision-making, and build financial capacity throughout the organization.

This is a foundational leadership role for the Band. The successful candidate will bring strong technical finance skills, a practical and organized approach, and the ability to explain financial information clearly to people with varying levels of financial knowledge. The role requires someone who can respectfully support managers and leadership to understand budgets, monitor variances, strengthen accountability and make informed decisions that protect the Nation’s resources and support long-term sustainability.

Employment Status: Full-time, permanent

Reports to: General Manager, with advisory and reporting relationship to Chief and Council

Compensation: $80k-90k/year

Key Responsibilities

• Lead annual and long-term budgeting, financial planning, forecasting and cash flow management.
• Prepare clear and timely financial reports, variance analysis, dashboards and briefing materials for leadership, funders, Chief and Council.
• Provide practical financial advice to support responsible decision-making, accountability and the sustainable use of resources across the organization.
• Oversee day-to-day finance operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, reconciliations, general ledger, purchasing, cash management and financial records.
• Strengthen internal controls, approval processes, documentation, financial policies and procedures.
• Monitor funding agreements, reporting deadlines, eligible expenditures and compliance requirements.
• Support funding applications, budgets, claims, reports and related financial documentation.
• Lead audit preparation, year-end close, working papers, and responses to auditor requests.
• Identify financial risks, reporting gaps, audit findings and control issues, and recommending practical solutions.
• Supervise, coach and support finance staff, including work planning, training, and performance management.
• Build financial understanding across the organization by supporting managers and employees to understand budgets, reports, coding and funding restrictions.
• Model confidentiality, professionalism, accountability, patience and service-oriented leadership.

What You Bring

Skills & Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, business administration or a related field; an equivalent combination of education, training and progressive experience may be considered.
• Minimum of five years of progressive finance and accounting experience.
• Minimum of two years of leadership or supervisory experience.
• Experience with budgeting, cash flow forecasting, asset management, audit preparation, funding agreements, payroll, financial policies, and internal controls.
• Strong knowledge of financial reporting, variance analysis, reconciliations, and financial administration practices.
• Proficiency in MS Excel, data analysis and systems.
• Ability to build effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
• Professionalism and ability to communicate complex financial information to diverse audiences.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

Preferred

• Experience working with a First Nation government, Indigenous organization or community-based organization.
• Experience with Adagio and PayDirt software.
