Job Description

Job Summary

This position, based in Bedford, NS, is responsible for providing safety leadership to management and employees through effective communication and guidance. The safety coordinator will educate the workforce to reduce workplace accidents, brief employees on job risks, conduct orientations, and discuss hazards and preventative measures with supervisors and management. The candidate must understand the operations and work conducted to build a strong safety culture.

Responsibilities

1. Conduct new employee safety orientations and arrange additional training as necessary.
2. Assist supervision with Hazard Assessments and Job Safety Analysis (JSA).
3. Conduct safety audits and inspections to evaluate the safety program and identify improvements.
4. Recommend and follow up on corrective actions.
5. Investigate and report incidents/accidents promptly.
6. Organize and facilitate toolbox talks.
7. Participate in monthly safety meetings and communicate safety information to managers.
8. Organize emergency preparedness policies and procedures.
9. Assist in managing employee return-to-work programs.
10. Travel to worksites as required.
11. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Technical Requirements

1. Relevant safety experience in an industrial/unionized environment, preferably in construction.
2. Knowledge of legislated safety requirements.
3. Professional Safety designation (CSS, CSO, NCSO, CRSP) is an asset.
4. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office.

Business Requirements

1. Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills.
2. Excellent time management and organizational skills.
3. Valid Nova Scotia Driver's License.
