Job description

About McElhanney

Based in Western Canada for over 110 years, McElhanney offers innovative and practical engineering, surveying, mapping, planning, landscape architecture, and environmental services. As a 100% employee‑owned and operated firm, with over 1,400 staff members in 31 locations, we are proud to offer qualified staff with shareholding options in our company. At McElhanney, we work in teams to build strong connections with our staff, clients, and local communities. Our employees enjoy working here because of our varied projects, high levels of autonomy, opportunities for career development, excellent total compensation and benefits package, and collaborating with a team of great professionals.

The Opportunity

McElhanney is seeking an experienced Site Manager – Field Operations Leader to oversee our site activities at a major mining project in Northwest British Columbia. This role provides overall leadership for McElhanney’s multidisciplinary team operating at site, which will include approximately 16–20 personnel across:

  • Senior Road Resident Engineering Representation (RER)
  • Erosion & Sediment Control (ESC) Representation
  • On‑site Geochemistry and Geotechnical Materials Testing Laboratories
  • Field‑based Geochemical Sampling Crews

The Site Manager will serve as McElhanney’s primary on‑site representative and overall field authority, responsible for coordinating people, safety, reporting, and client interface across all scopes.

Note: This is a construction and field operations leadership role with strong safety oversight. It is not an engineering design role. Technical and engineering decisions remain with the Engineer of Record and designated Resident Engineering Representatives.

The role operates on a 14 days on / 2 paid travel days / and 12 days off rotation, with 12‑hour shifts while on site. Camp accommodations and travel are provided and coordinated directly by McElhanney.

This is a full‑time, project‑term position with an anticipated minimum duration of three years. There may be opportunities to support additional projects during the off‑season; however, these opportunities cannot be guaranteed.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide overall field leadership and coordination for McElhanney’s full site team of approximately 16–20 personnel
  • Oversee site operations across road construction oversight, environmental compliance, laboratory operations, and geochemical sampling programs
  • Act as McElhanney’s primary point of contact for the Client’s Project Manager
  • Lead daily internal construction and coordination meetings
  • Participate in external daily planning meetings with the Client and other vendors
  • Ensure discipline leads (RERs, lab supervisors, and sampling leads) provide timely inputs to consolidated daily reporting
  • Prepare and deliver McElhanney’s daily client report
  • Monitor overall progress across all site scopes and identify emerging risks early
  • Maintain strong alignment between construction sequencing, lab operations, and sampling activities
  • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture across all McElhanney personnel
  • Conduct regular field walk‑downs and maintain visible leadership presence
  • Support incident investigations, emergency response coordination, and corrective action follow‑up
  • Maintain professional and constructive relationships with contractors, client representatives, regulators (as requested), and other site stakeholders
What You’ll Bring
  • 10+ years of experience in field construction leadership, site operations management, or safety leadership roles
  • Experience managing multi‑disciplinary teams in mining, heavy civil, or large‑scale resource infrastructure environments
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee both construction and operational support functions simultaneously
  • Strong safety background; credentials such as NCSO, CSO, NEBOSH, Mine Manager certification, or similar are considered strong assets
  • Experience leading daily site coordination meetings and interfacing directly with client project managers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize multiple discipline inputs into clear reporting
  • Experience working in remote, camp‑based environments with rotational schedules
  • Comfort operating in mountainous terrain and variable weather conditions
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Ability to meet site access requirements, including pre‑hire and ongoing randomized drug and alcohol testing
What Can We Offer You?
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Maternity and parental leave top‑up program, health and dental coverage, RRSP matching, and Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • Safe & Inclusive Workplace: A culture of respect and inclusion for all.
  • Compensation: Attractive total compensation package including a generous bonus plan.
  • Professional Development: Reimbursement for dues, educational assistance, mentorship program, workshops, and committee involvement.
  • Career Progression: Support and mentorship to shape a career path that fits your goals.
  • Relocation Support: Financial assistance if applicable.

This role is designated as a safety sensitive position.
