Job summary

Thurber Engineering Ltd. in Victoria, BC, is seeking a Field and Laboratory Technician to perform construction review, QC/QA testing, and field sampling on Vancouver Island. You will test soils, concrete and asphalt and ensure compliance with industry standards.

The role requires a high school diploma, a valid Class 5 driver’s license, and the ability to lift 50 lbs and work in all weather conditions. Flexibility for out-of-town work and strong communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; related post-secondary program is an asset.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English is required.
• Able to lift 50 lbs and perform field work in all weather conditions.
• Willingness for flexible schedule, including out-of-town assignments, overtime, weekends and nights.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong computer skills (spreadsheets and word processing).
• CCIL/CSA concrete testing certificate and ASTM/CSA knowledge are assets.

Responsibilities

• Provide construction review and quality control/assurance testing for projects on Vancouver Island.
• Perform laboratory testing of soils, concrete and asphalt.
• Ensure all work conforms to CCIL, ASTM and other standards.
• Communicate results and observations to clients, contractors and project engineers.
• Contribute to a team environment while working independently with minimal supervision.
• Liaise with project engineers and client site representatives.
• Uphold strong health and safety practices.
• Conduct in situ testing of materials on construction sites (compaction, concrete, asphalt).
