Job summary

BC SPCA seeks an Animal Welfare Officer to respond to concerns of animal cruelty across Nanaimo, Ladysmith, and surrounding islands. The role involves investigations under PCA Act, Criminal Code, and BC SPCA policies, and may require euthanasia where necessary.

Travel up to 25% and overnight stays may be required. The position is temporary, full-time with benefits, with potential to become permanent after one year upon meeting requirements.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of federal, provincial, and municipal animal welfare laws.
• Ability to conduct investigations
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Responsibilities

• Respond to concerns of animal cruelty within the assigned area.
• Conduct investigations following PCA Act, Criminal Code, and BC SPCA policies.
• Gather evidence and prepare notices of disposition as required.
• Take action to relieve animal distress, including euthanasia when needed.
• Record actions in appropriate software and maintain compliance records.
• Collaborate with statutory authorities and other staff.
• Attend training and qualify as Special Provincial Constable within one year.
