Summary

The Family Support Worker promotes the safety, stability, and well-being of children, youth, and families within the Gitsegukla community. This position provides prevention, early intervention, advocacy, and family support services using a strengths-based and family-centred approach. The role includes direct client support, case coordination, community outreach, and collaboration with Gitsegukla departments, community members, and external service providers.

What you will do
  • Provide one-on-one support to families, caregivers, and youth.
  • Develop and deliver family-centered prevention programs and workshops.
  • Assist families in accessing community and external resources, including housing, health, education, addiction services, and income assistance.
  • Provide crisis response, de-escalation, and referral support when required.
  • Develop strengths-based support plans with families and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Advocate for clients with external service providers and agencies.
  • Support access to cultural teachings, land-based learning, language, and community healing practices.
  • Work collaboratively with Elders, knowledge holders, cultural leaders, departments, agencies, and service providers.
  • Maintain accurate case notes, intake forms, service plans, and outcome reports while ensuring confidentiality.
  • Assist with program evaluations, reporting, statistics, and recommendations for program improvement.
  • Participate in team planning and discussions related to community wellness and child and family development.
Qualifications

Education and Experience: Certificate or diploma in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Indigenous Studies, or a related Human Services field. Minimum of two (2) years of direct experience in family support, social services, community outreach, or prevention programming. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. High School Diploma or an equivalent.

Skill Sets and Competencies
  • Understanding of Indigenous approaches to child and family wellness, including intergenerational trauma and cultural healing.
  • Knowledge of community resources, BC child welfare legislation, including Bill C-92, and family support best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and emotionally complex environment.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to maintain records and complete reports.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends, to meet client needs.
