Job summary

YWCA Cambridge is hiring a Facilities Service Worker to help maintain a safe, clean shelter environment for unhoused women and gender-diverse individuals. The role emphasizes maintenance tasks, safety, and compassionate care within our emergency shelter setting.

The position is part-time (20 hours per week) with responsibilities including routine tasks, inspections, and coordination with contractors. A valid driver’s license is required, and prior maintenance experience is preferred, along with

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks (plumbing, electrical, painting, cleaning).
  • Inspect building, equipment and systems; address maintenance needs.
  • Respond to repair requests promptly and coordinate with external contractors.
  • Keep common areas clean and monitor for hazards; manage waste and supplies.
  • Set up/move furniture and maintain inventory of supplies.

Position Overview

YWCA Cambridge Emergency Women’s Shelter is seeking a dedicated and reliable Facilities Service Worker to help ensure a safe, clean and welcoming environment for unhoused women and gender diverse individuals. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, general maintenance skills and a compassionate approach when working in the emergency shelter.

What you’ll do
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including minor plumbing, electrical, painting and cleaning
  • Conduct regular inspections of the building (indoor and outdoor), equipment and systems to identify and address maintenance needs
  • Respond promptly to repair requests
  • Coordinate and communicate work with external contractors for building maintenance and repair as needed
  • Ensure common areas, bathrooms and outdoor spaces are kept clean and in good repair, exterior daily checks to address potential hazards and monitoring and reinstalling sharps containers when needed, removing garbage to the exterior dumpster, maintaining shelter recycling for weekly pick up, and support with weekly supply deliveries
  • Assist with setting up and moving furniture or equipment as needed
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment, and inform the Director of Housing of any needs
  • Follow safety protocols and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations,
  • Communicate effectively with the Director of Housing to coordinate maintenance activities, and
  • Support occasional emergency repairs outside of regular hours if required.
What you bring
  • Previous experience in maintenance, facilities management, or a related field
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing from 15-50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, reaching and climbing ladders
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Understanding of Harm Reduction and Trauma Informed Practice
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Working Conditions
  • Part-time position with a flexible schedule of 20 hours per week,
  • Work environment may include exposure to cleaning products, tools, and outdoor tasks

The working environment also includes potential exposure to high conflict situations.
