Job summary

Brandon Fire and Emergency Services is seeking an experienced Firefighter/Paramedic to join our team in Brandon. You will deliver firefighting, emergency medical services, and community paramedicine to residents, while upholding integrity, professionalism, and a patient‑centered approach.

Qualifications

  • Must be a Permanent Resident and legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Be a serving Firefighter/Paramedic with a recognized Paramedic Service (recognition determined by Brandon Fire and Emergency Services).
  • Valid Class 4 Province of Manitoba driver’s license or equivalent with acceptable driving record.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check and Child and Adult Abuse Registry Check.
  • Must meet vision, hearing, and training standards acceptable to Brandon Fire and Emergency Services.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to fire alarms to combat, control, and extinguish fires and perform related duties (ventilation, search and rescue, overhaul).
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide PCP-level care as per guidelines and standards.
  • Maintain records and reports; assist in dispatch and communications.
  • Attend in-house and external training to maintain certification and competence.
  • Operate and maintain ambulances, equipment, PPE, and related apparatus to department standards.
  • Perform housekeeping and maintenance of facilities and grounds as required.
  • Conduct public fire education and prevention activities as directed.

Job description

Position Conditions: Brandon Fire and Emergency Services is on the lookout for hardworking and committed team-minded individuals to join our family. As an experienced Firefighter/Paramedic in our service, you will play an important role in providing the highest level of care to the residents of Brandon while responding to medical calls and being part of the team that will provide Community Paramedicine to our residents.

INCENTIVES

Incentives may be subject to change and are based on needs at the time of competition posting:

  • Four (4) or more years of Firefighter/Paramedic Experience will start at a 1st Level Firefighter/Paramedic wage ($111,069.29)
  • Less than four years’ experience in firefighting will receive compensation as per the wages below
  • Enhanced vacation/holiday time

Rate of Pay: $36.62 - $50.86 per hour (2026 rates)

This competition will include testing and an interview.

PURPOSE OF POSITION

As a member of Brandon Fire and Emergency Services, an experienced Firefighter/Paramedic must have a high level of integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to serving the public with respect and compassion. A Firefighter/Paramedic will deliver, as a member of the emergency services team, firefighting, emergency medical services, community paramedicine, rescue and non-emergency services in Brandon and the surrounding area.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responds to fire alarms to combat, control, and extinguish fires and to perform the necessary duties related to firefighting such as ventilation, search and rescue, overhaul and salvage;
  • Responds to emergency calls for medical assistance and performs emergency medical duties at the PCP level (or higher) as per Manitoba Health Guidelines and Protocols and/or Department standards;
  • Provides medical care and assessment within the Brandon Police Services Detention Unit.
  • Receives incoming emergency and business calls and assists in the logging of information and dispatching of appropriate personnel and equipment as per General Operating Guidelines or as directed;
  • Attends all in-house training sessions to maintain a level of competence and certification satisfactory to meet all Department standards and participates in external training sessions as directed and required;
  • Maintains records and prepares forms and reports required through the delivery of the emergency services;
  • Cleans, operates, and maintains ambulance vehicles, equipment, personal protective gear, and all other related apparatus to Department standards;
  • Performs housekeeping and routine maintenance tasks of emergency services facilities and grounds as required or assigned;
  • Performs public fire education and fire prevention duties as directed;
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or required.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Must be a Permanent Resident and legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Be a serving Firefighter/Paramedic with a recognized Paramedic Service (“recognition”, to be determined by the Brandon Fire and Emergency Services).
  • Valid Class 4 Province of Manitoba driver’s license or equivalent with an acceptable drivers abstract.
  • Must have a satisfactory Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check and Child and Adult Abuse Registry Check.
  • Must meet vision, hearing, and training standards discipline record acceptable to Brandon Fire and Emergency Services standards
WORK CONDITIONS

The Firefighter/Paramedic will work in a team environment.

  • Work in a shared and consultative manner with other employees (daily);
  • Self motivated and quality driven to perform independent projects and facilitate team goals (daily);
  • Necessary to work in all types of weather conditions (daily);
  • Works in areas of confined space, heights, unpleasant noise levels, hazardous environments, and adverse odours (daily);
  • Shall be available to work varying shifts and overtime and call outs (occasionally);
  • Responsible to the Captain or designate.
