Job summary

The City of Kamloops is hiring a permanent, full-time Equipment Operator V – Streets to lead operations and maintain heavy equipment for road repair and maintenance. You will ensure safety, mentor junior operators, and contribute to a high standard of city streets and transportation services in Kamloops.

Strong knowledge of heavy equipment operation, safety practices, and adherence to union rules is essential; a Class 1 licence with air brake endorsement is required, with a competitive benefits

Qualifications

• Completion of senior secondary school or its equivalent.
• Valid BC Driver's Licence - Class 1 with air brake endorsement for operating a tandem with pup.
• Minimum 1 year of experience driving tandem axle vehicle in city traffic and confined spaces; 3 months on roller, loader, backhoe for road construction.
• Minimum 500 hours on a grader completing road maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Lead role in operating and maintaining a variety of heavy equipment to support road repair and maintenance.
• Ensure safe work practices and provide guidance to junior operators and crew members.
• Work within the CUPE Local 900 framework; comply with the Collective Agreement and union requirements.

Position Overview

Are you seeking an opportunity where you can directly impact the streets and local transportation around Kamloops? We are seeking a permanent, full-time Equipment Operator V – Streets where you will take on a lead role in operating and maintaining a variety of heavy equipment to support road repair, and maintenance activities. This position is responsible for completing complex street operations, ensuring safe work practices, and providing guidance and direction to junior operators and crew members. The successful candidate must have the following qualifications:

• Completion of senior secondary school or its equivalent.
• Valid BC Driver's Licence - Class 1 with air brake endorsement (for operating a tandemwith pup).
• Minimum of one year's previous experience driving a tandem axle vehicle in city traffic and confined spaces, including three months' experience operating a roller, loader, and backhoe for road construction.
• Minimum 500 hours of previous experience on a grader completing road maintenance.

This is a unionized position with CUPE Local 900; check out our Collective Agreement (2024 - 2025) for full details (ratified 2026 Collective Agreement coming soon). As this is a unionized position, all qualifications must be met in order to be shortlisted for the position.
