Job summary

Strathcona County is seeking an Equipment Operator I for our Landscaping & Events team. You will safely operate a range of equipment, perform manual labour, and help train staff in safe operation.

The role supports turf development, feature sports fields, horticulture, urban forestry, and playground projects at Strathcona County and Broadmoor Public Golf Course.

Qualifications

  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions and work with customers.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of OH&S and WHMIS regulations.
  • Must be able to perform under time constraints and overtime may be required.
  • Ability to organize a crew and promote teamwork.
  • General mechanical knowledge is required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with two years of outdoor operations experience.
  • Turf management, construction, or sports field maintenance and landscaping experience.
  • Experience operating, servicing and maintaining trucks, trailers, mowers, tractors, skid steers or small equipment.

Job description

Recreation, Parks, and Culture is seeking an Equipment Operator I for our Landscaping & Events team. In this role, you would contribute to the maintenance and improvement of outdoor recreational areas by safely operating a variety of self-propelled small equipment, performing manual labour, and training other staff in the safe operation of equipment. This position will support turf development and maintenance, feature sports fields, horticulture and urban forestry, playground construction and maintenance within Strathcona County, as well as at the Broadmoor Public Golf Course.

This posting is for one full-time hourly position and two part-time hourly positions for up to 18 weeks

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate self-propelled equipment including a variety of trucks, trailers, ride-on mowers, tractors, skid steers, gas-powered and electric hand tools, line painters, and a variety of small equipment such as string trimmers, push mowers, generators, drills, and backpack sprayers in a safe and efficient manner
  • Monitor, maintain, and service equipment to ensure it is in proper working order and meets operating and safety standards
  • Use and share knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Regulations and Code, follow safety guidelines, identify potential hazardous situations, and adapt appropriately
  • Assist Operator II and Team Lead positions by training other staff members in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Display accountability when providing direction, training, and overseeing the work of small crews in the completion of assigned tasks, and assist with other related duties
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions and interact in a positive manner with internal and external customers
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety and WHMIS regulations
  • Ability to maintain mental alertness while performing duties often with frequent interruptions and under time constraints; unscheduled overtime may be required
  • Ability to organize a crew to perform basic job functions efficiently, promote team building
  • General mechanical knowledge
  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent with two years related experience in outdoor operations
  • Turf management, construction, or sports field maintenance, landscaping and irrigation experience
  • Previous experience operating, servicing, and maintaining trucks, trailers, ride-on mowers, tractors, skid steers and/or small equipment
Conditions of Employment:
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification required prior to start date
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability and willingness to perform duties in inclement and adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required
