Job summary

Veolia North America is seeking a temporary Equipment Operator for our Materials Recovery Facility in Canada. The role involves safe operation of heavy equipment, housekeeping, and adherence to COR standards.

You will work up to 17 hours per day, with potential weekend shifts and overtime as needed. The position requires a high school diploma, 6 months of equipment experience or related training, and the ability to pass medical and immunization requirements.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • 6 months of industrial equipment experience or demonstrated aptitude/trainings.
  • 3–5 years related experience preferred.
  • Must complete in-house training on quality systems, safety practices, and corporate policies.
  • Must be able to operate heavy equipment and wear respirator when required.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment medical, immunizations, and background checks.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy and/or industrial equipment safely and efficiently in the Materials Recovery Facility.
  • Maintain housekeeping and cleanliness of assigned area and equipment.
  • Follow COR standards and environmental requirements; comply with health and safety policies.
  • Meet KPIs and operational targets; report when targets will not be met.
  • Provide training and mentoring to team members as assigned.
  • Support plant initiatives and continuous improvement projects.

Job Description

The Equipment Operator (MRF) safety and efficiently operates heavy and/or industrial equipment such as front loaders, commodity balers, grapples, and forklifts in a safe, effective and efficient manner at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) to achieve operational targets. Must be able to navigate and operate equipment within a recycling facility and around various external solid waste haulers while moving large piles of debris and recycling materials. Required to perform housekeeping tasks as required. Incumbent is required to perform Safety Sensitive duties or responsibilities.

This position operates within a COR certified plant environment (which is a requirement of our Contract) and is required to comply with all regulatory requirements and the Client’s Environmental Management System. The facility operates up to 17 hours per day, potentially 7 days per week.

Main Responsibilities
  • Understands and promotes the Company’s, the Division’s, the Plant’s, and the Department’s mission statement, values, and strategic goals.
  • Proactively promotes through example a safe work ethic, attitude, and workplace. Complies with all health and safety policies, standards, and procedures to achieve a safe work environment and safety for all staff and visitors as well as the Company’s, Client’s and Regulatory Agencies safe work objectives and requirements.
  • Maintains effective working relationships and communications with peers, management, and other Company departments and staff. Effectively resolves any conflicts in a timely and respectful manner to achieve positive and healthy working relationships and workplace environment.
  • Promotes a quality-first work ethic and attitude to provide a product that is manufactured to the highest standard achievable.
  • Maintains confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Understands, complies with, and is accountable for adherence to COR quality standards in all activities.
  • Safely operates company owned, leased, managed, or rented vehicles and/or mobile equipment. Incumbent is required to perform Safety Sensitive duties and responsibilities.
  • Manages assigned work station/tasks within scope of responsibility so all Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and operational targets are achieved.
  • Safely and efficiently operates all assigned (both as primary as well as for relief coverage) unit equipment and process(es) as outlined in the applicable SOP syllabus.
  • Advises Supervisor when production targets will not be met and provide explanation of shortfalls and actively participate in the development of productivity improvement initiatives.
  • Conducts maintenance checks on equipment.
  • Maintains a high-level of cleanliness within the assigned Unit(s) as instructed. Daily cleaning of assigned area focusing not only on identifiable piles but dust accumulation on equipment.
  • Diligently works on and completes assigned training plan and achieves competency for all aspects of the assigned Unit(s) within agreed-upon timelines. Continually works to enhance operational skills. With prior approval and when opportunities exist, commences training on other equipment.
  • Seeks opportunities to simplify and improve work methods and presents them to Supervisor for approval.
  • Participates in the development of strategies to improve productivity, lower downtime and operating costs, and add value to the MRF.
  • Provides training and mentoring of other team members and personnel as assigned.
  • Supports other initiatives of the Plant to promote a healthy and positive work environment and enhance employee morale and engagement.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Minimum of High School Diploma.
  • Minimum of six (6) months’ industrial equipment experience, or combination of demonstrated experience, aptitude, and specific skills training.
  • Preference for three (3) to five (5) years’ related experience.
  • In-house training on the quality systems, quality regulations, and safe work practices (including WHMIS).
  • In-house training on Corporate policies and procedures.
  • Respectful Workplace Training.
  • Ability to operate and control heavy equipment by moving levers or foot pedals, operating switches or turning dials. May be required to operate several types of equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to be attentive to details to meet safety and quality standards.
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical challenges.
  • Effective English language communication skills to verbally communicate, understand, comprehend, and comply with all job requirements.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability and willingness to work assigned shifts and pre-authorized overtime as scheduled, including outside of regular business hours to achieve operational requirements.
  • Ability to wear respirator when required to meet safety guidelines due to dusty environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Ability to complete all conditions of employment including negative alcohol and drug test, current and clean Class 5 driver’s license, pre-employment medical, and immunizations.
Work Environment
Temporary and full-time position, of 6 months

with the following working hours:

  • Hours of Work: 8 hours/shift; 6:00 am – 2:30 pm Day Shift; 2:00 pm – 10:30 pm Night Shift
  • Lunch Break: 30 minute unpaid
  • Rest Breaks: 15 minutes paid, both morning and afternoon
  • Base Hours: 40 hours per week / 2,080 hours per year
  • Schedule Work Days: Monday to Friday
  • Overtime: Availability to work overtime is required, primarily on Saturdays
