Job summary

Johnson Controls is seeking an Intermediate CAD Designer to create, modify, and manage detailed 2D and 3D models for engineering and product development projects in Canada. You will translate sketches and specifications into precise technical drawings while complying with industry standards and internal quality requirements.

You will support project engineers and senior designers by delivering accurate documentation, collaborating across teams, and maintaining revision controls.

Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of professional experience in CAD drafting or design
  • 2–5 years of experience supporting mechanical products and assemblies in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in at least one major CAD platform (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, Inventor, Creo)
  • Strong understanding of dimensioning, tolerancing, and drafting standards (GD&T if applicable)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and engineering documentation
  • Solid knowledge of materials, fabrication methods, or construction practices relevant to Manufacturing
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills

Responsibilities

  • Produce and revise 2D drawings and 3D models using CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, Inventor, Creo or similar tools
  • Interpret engineering sketches, specifications, and design notes to develop accurate technical documentation
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other designers to ensure design intent is fully captured
  • Maintain drawing accuracy through version control, documentation updates, and adherence to drafting standards ASME Y14
  • Prepare layouts, assemblies, detail drawings, and BOMs as required
  • Conduct basic design calculations or checks to validate dimensions and tolerances
  • Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback efficiently
  • Support the development of manufacturing, construction, or fabrication packages
  • Identify design issues and propose practical solutions to improve manufacturability or constructability
  • Ensure all work complies with company standards, industry codes, and project requirements

Key Responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in Inventor & Creo
  • Experience with 3D modeling, assemblies, and parametric design.
  • Familiarity with PDM/PLM systems (e.g., Vault, Windchill, SolidWorks PDM).
  • Exposure to simulation tools (FEA, CFD) or rendering software.
  • Experience working in industries such as manufacturing, architecture, aerospace, automotive, or product design.
  • Associate degree or technical certification in drafting, design technology, engineering technology, or related field.
Soft Skills
  • Strong problem‑solving mindset.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting team objectives.
  • Organized, methodical approach to documentation and revisions.
  • Willingness to learn new tools, standards, and workflows.
  • Create fabrication drawings with weld symbols, machining notes, and GD&T.

  • Build parametric models, assemblies, and exploded views.
  • Support prototyping and testing activities.
