Job summary

Hatfield Consultants is seeking an Environmental Technician to join its EMA team and support aquatic and fisheries field programs across British Columbia. You will work with experienced biologists and environmental professionals on a variety of projects, contributing to environmental monitoring for diverse clients.

Job description

We are seeking an Environmental Technician to join our dynamic Environmental and Assessment Monitoring (EMA) team to support a variety of projects throughout British Columbia. Working alongside experienced biologists and environmental professionals, you will contribute to aquatic and fisheries field programs while supporting environmental monitoring projects for a diverse range of clients.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct aquatic and fisheries field assessments.
  • Perform electrofishing, fish habitat assessment, benthic invertebrate and periphyton sampling, and surface water and sediment quality monitoring.
  • Collect, record, and manage environmental field data while ensuring accuracy and quality.
  • Prepare, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot field equipment.
  • Support the analysis, interpretation, and management of environmental monitoring data.
  • Assist with the preparation of technical reports, figures, and field summaries.
  • Travel to project sites throughout British Columbia and work safely in remote environments under varying weather conditions.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams while maintaining Hatfield’s commitment to safety, quality, and client service.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum one year of environmental consulting or related field experience.
  • Diploma or degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Fisheries, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline.
  • Experience conducting fisheries and aquatic field assessments, including electrofishing and benthic invertebrate sampling.
  • Experience with surface water quality sampling and environmental monitoring programs.
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal environmental regulations and standard field protocols.
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license for the past three years, and the ability to meet the requirements for our third‑party automobile insurance policy.
  • As a condition of employment, our field technical staff who are required to work for our clients on safety‑sensitive sites will need to successfully pass drug and alcohol screening during their employment.
Other Assets/Skills
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to accurately collect and manage field data.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Experience with R software an asset.
