Job summary

CORE Geomatics is seeking an Environmental Specialist for Field Operations to perform field tasks on diverse projects including oil & gas and renewable energy. The role requires a degree in conservation biology or related fields and 3-7 years of relevant experience. Candidates should be physically fit, possess strong communication skills, and be prepared for fieldwork in challenging conditions.

Qualifications

Position: Environmental Specialist (Field Operations)
The Work
Fieldwork
  1. Focus: Perform field tasks on oil & gas, pipeline, construction, infrastructure, and renewable energy projects as part of a multidisciplinary, virtual team.
  2. Shifts: Expect irregular shifts, typically 2-10 days, with potential for longer shifts and overnight stays in hotels or camps.
  3. Geographic Scope: Projects mainly located in Alberta.
  4. Data Collection and Monitoring: Conduct environmental data collection and construction monitoring activities.
  5. Adverse Conditions: Be prepared to work in remote and challenging environments such as muddy roads, steep terrain, and snowy conditions.
  6. Physical Demands: Carry field equipment (up to 30 lbs) including soil sampling tools and other gear.
Technical Expertise Required
  • Fish salvage and habitat assessment
  • Water quality monitoring (turbidity)
  • Wildlife surveys and sweeps
  • Wetland and vegetation ecology
  • Construction monitoring
  • Pipeline HDD fluids sampling
  • Soil sampling
Equipment and Tools
  • Vehicle Operation: Drive light-duty trucks, ATVs, UTVs, and trailers. A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Field Tools: Use navigational and data collection tools such as Garmin GPS, Avenza, Collector, etc.
Collaboration and Communication
  • CORE Values: Demonstrate commitment to CORE values in all activities.
  • Team Collaboration: Work with team members and client representatives.
  • Communication: Maintain strong verbal and written communication skills.
Administrative and Support Tasks
  • Complete QA/QC, data entry, and submit field data timely.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required.
Availability
  • Be available for up to 20 days of field work per month, including weekends, excluding vacation and personal days.
  • Expect approximately 10-11 days off per month.
Qualifications
  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in conservation biology, land reclamation, natural resource management, or forestry.
  • 3-7 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience as a Crew Leader.
  • Positive demeanor and ability to liaise with clients.
  • Passion for fieldwork in natural and construction environments.
  • Physically fit to walk extended distances in challenging conditions.
The Workplace
  • This is a field position involving work from home and 2-10 day field shifts as needed.
