Job summary

Your impact

Jacobs is currently looking to hire an Environmental Planner to join our dynamic team in a full-time role based out of our Toronto, Ontario office in a hybrid work-home environment. In this position, you will provide technical coordination and guidance to our multi-disciplinary teams (engineering and environment practitioners) and infrastructure clients. You will contribute to the environmental planning and permitting efforts of government (federal, provincial, and municipal) and privately-owned infrastructure projects. Your role involves supporting environmental components of the design, construction, and operations phases of infrastructure projects in Ontario; interfacing with our engineering groups and clients, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, conducting environmental due diligence, and strategic planning. Responsibilities
  • Support environmental planning and permitting throughout the lifecycle of a project, working with a multi-disciplinary team of biologists, planners, and engineers
  • Be part of a team working on a variety of complex projects delivering environmental assessments, environmental permitting/approvals, and environmental compliance monitoring
  • Stay current with relevant regulations and ensure project activities are in compliance with environmental standards under municipal, provincial, and federal legislation
  • Identify environmental permitting needs for projects and develop delivery schedules
  • Support and oversee the preparation of permit inputs, regulatory filings, and environmental management plans
  • Coordinate and provide technical writing support for projects
  • Manage project tasks and deliverables related to Provincial and Federal Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA)
  • Coordinate discipline and project-specific environmental field studies
  • Support engagement efforts with Indigenous communities, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies
  • Establish and maintain relationships with members of the public, government and non-government communities, associations, tenure holders, and Indigenous communities
  • In a collaborative manner, assist in expanding our client portfolio, including support for Business Development and proposal efforts
  • Develop staff through on-the-job mentorship.
Qualifications
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in a natural resources related field (biology, environmental planning, environmental science, ecology, forestry, or geography), or a related field.
  • 10 years or more of relevant experience in the natural resources sector in Ontario, preferably in a consulting environment
  • Notable experience should include delivering environmental assessments for linear and non-linear infrastructure such as pipelines, conveyance, electric transmission lines, roads, transit, and associated facilities
  • Demonstrated experience navigating provincial and federal environmental permitting, legislation, and regulatory requirements in Ontario
  • Demonstrated experience with provincial EA legislation under Ontario’s EA Act, including Individual/Comprehensive EAs, as well as Class EA processes (e.g., Municipal Class EA, Ministry of Transportation [MTO], Ontario Energy Board, Hydro One, Metrolinx/TRPAP), and knowledge of federal EA legislation (e.g., Impact Assessment Act, Canada Energy Regulator Act, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team with a focus on mentorship and contributing to the preparation of environmental assessments for a diverse range of projects
  • Demonstrated technical writing skills and high attention to detail to provide high-quality deliverables
  • Experience providing strategic advice to clients and internal teams by identifying risk and opportunities for value add.
  • Time management skills, with the ability to simultaneously work on multiple tasks and projects and meet project deadlines
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal and willingness to be client-facing to grow our planning and permitting services
  • High level of initiative, problem-solving, and adaptability
  • Demonstrated ability to work under minimal supervision with a positive self-starter attitude with strong initiative
  • Strong understanding and consideration for safety
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience seeing major projects from planning through construction phases
  • Financial literacy and understanding of managing budgets and schedules.
  • Experience working with a diverse range of industrial sectors such as oil and gas, mining, transportation, municipal infrastructure, and energy
  • The ability to inspire, mentor, motivate, and build respect among colleagues, fostering a cohesive work environment
  • An interest or experience in Project Management is an asset.
  • An interest or experience in business development is an asset.
Salary Range

Posted Salary Range Minimum: 79,600.00

Posted Salary Range Upper: 129,600.00

The base salary range for this position is $79,600.00 to $129,600.00. This range reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across Ontario, Canada locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
