Job summary

ONxpress Civils is seeking an Environmental Inspector to monitor construction activities across Ontario projects. You will assess impacts on soil, water, air and biota, verify mitigation measures, and document compliance issues with formal records.

The role requires a degree in an environmental field and CANCISEC certification, plus experience with erosion control in transit/roadway works. Candidates must hold a valid G-class license and be willing to travel to sites.

Qualifications

• Degree in ecology, biology or environmental science is required.
• Experience in erosion and sediment control during roadway or transit construction.
• Ontario project experience preferred and CANCISEC certification.

Job description

Metrolinx's GO Expansion program is delivering more GO service across the network, including the capacity to deliver two-way service every 15 minutes or better on core routes. Work is already underway on new track, station renovations and infrastructure upgrades on parts of the Lakeshore, Stouffville, Kitchener and Barrie lines. The investment will generate thousands of new jobs and economic opportunities across the region. The ONxpress Civil Joint Venture is comprised of Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc. and FCC Canada Ltd. This multidisciplinary team leads the delivery of civil and track works, leveraging global expertise to introduce innovative solutions across the GO Transit network.

What You'll Do:

• Conduct routine and event-based environmental inspections and monitoring of construction activities to verify compliance with Environmental Management Plans, permit conditions, approved construction procedures, and environmental protection measures.
• Assess construction activities for potential impacts to soil, surface water, groundwater, vegetation, wildlife, air quality, and nearby communities, and evaluate the effectiveness of mitigation measures.
• Identify environmental deficiencies, incidents, potential risks, and instances of non-compliance; document findings, verify containment and corrective measures, and follow up to ensure issues are resolved within required timeframes.
• Monitor dewatering and discharge activities to ensure that water is properly managed, treated where necessary and released in accordance with applicable requirements.
• Conduct inspections during changing weather and site conditions, including heavy rainfall, snowmelt, high-water events and other conditions that may increase environmental risk.
• Coordinate with construction supervisors, forepersons, subcontractors and site personnel to communicate environmental requirements and promote a strong environmental culture.
• Participate in pre-construction meetings, toolbox talks, environmental awareness sessions and site-specific training as required.
• Maintain complete, accurate, and organized records of all environmental monitoring and inspection activities, including daily logs, photographs, deficiencies, corrective actions, permits, approvals, correspondence, laboratory results, waste documentation, and monitoring, incident, and non-compliance reports.
• Assist with environmental audits, compliance reviews and regulatory inspections and meetings with project representatives, consultants, agencies and other stakeholders.
• Support the Environmental Manager and Environmental Compliance Officer with environmental reporting, performance tracking and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Maintain current knowledge of applicable environmental legislation, permits, approvals, project requirements and environmental best management practices.
• Be willing and available to work occasional night shifts, weekends and other non-standard hours to support construction activities, respond to environmental incidents and complete inspections when required.
• Travel regularly to project sites throughout the project corridor using a corporate vehicle; must possess a valid Class G driver's licence, be comfortable operating a pickup truck, and have access to suitable overnight parking for a company vehicle.
• The main work location for this position is one or more construction sites.

What You'll Bring:

• Diploma or a bachelor or advanced degree in an environmental related discipline (ecology/biology/environmental science).
• Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated work experience in all aspects of environmental monitoring and mitigation during roadway construction or construction of transit infrastructure, specifically with respect to work in and around watercourses and in the application and correction of erosion and sedimentation control measures, reporting spills and the containment of effluent and dust during construction.
• Experience with projects in Ontario of a similar scope and complexity to the Project.
• Certification as a Canadian Certified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control (CANCISEC), or have proven proficiency in observing, inspecting, and reporting on the implementation of Erosion and Sediment Control Plans.
• Valid Class G driver's licence

Expected compensation for this role is between $80,000.00-100,000.00 annually. Base salaries are determined according to multiple factors including skills, experience and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into consideration. In addition to base salary ONxpress also offers a comprehensive medical and dental program, RRSP with company matching and the potential to participate in our discretionary, performance based bonus program.
