Job description

Position title: Environmental Geochemist

Your future role on our team

We are seeking an experienced environmental geochemist to perform and supervise various geochemical characterization studies (ore, tailings or mine waste rock) and closure plans. These studies include assessing acid and neutral mine drainage potential and contaminant leaching as well as predicting water quality from tailings areas. The geochemist will define acceptable management methods for mine tailings based on analysis results to prevent or control impacts on water quality and the environment. The incumbent must be familiar with current Québec, Canadian and international regulations on water management, mine tailings and mine site restoration.

With a solid knowledge of chemistry and mineralogy, the incumbent will also help select samples and design, interpret and supervise the various static and kinetic laboratory and field tests.

The incumbent must understand how passive treatment systems work in order to manage surface water at mine sites and will participate in their design. The environmental geochemist must also understand the main geochemical modelling tools and can supervise related studies.

Summary of certifications and job requirements

  • University degree in Geology, Geological Engineering or Inorganic Chemistry with a specialization in Mineralogy or in Environmental Geochemistry
  • At least 10 years of experience in Applied Geochemistry in the fields of environment and mine site characterization and remediation, with some experience in contaminant hydrology or hydrogeochemistry
  • Familiarity with interpreting static and kinetic testing as well as with key geochemical modelling software, such as WATEQ4F, MINTEQ/MINTEQA2, MINQL, PHREEQE/PHREEQM, HSC Chemistry, CHESS
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Excellent teamwork skills within multidisciplinary engineering teams composed mainly of geotechnical engineers, hydrogeologists and environmental specialists
  • Asset: Fluent in both French and English
