Job summary

BC Hydro is seeking a Contaminated Sites Specialist to join the Pollution Prevention team in Burnaby. The role oversees contaminated site management, liaises with regulators, and leads consultants to deliver projects on time and within budget.

We require a BC-designated professional (P.Ag, P.Eng, or P.Geo), 8+ years in the field, and strong communication and project leadership skills. Travel and safety requirements apply; Edmonds location in Burnaby serves as the base.

About the job:

What you’ll do

• The successful candidate must bring a solid understanding of and experience with the relevant legislation, guidelines and current practices for contaminated sites management. Experience with spill preparedness and response and hazardous waste management also an asset.
• Provides expert environmental technical and regulatory advice within BC Hydro and liaises internally and externally with other environmental specialists and regulatory agencies in the areas of contaminated sites and spill mitigation.
• Develops cost estimates and terms of reference for contaminated site and other pollution prevention projects and programs. Manages consultants and contractors to execute such work including cost control, scheduling, contract management, coordination of quality assurance and peer review, monthly tracking of invoices, progress, forecasts, variances, reporting and deliverables.
• Researches the environmental and regulatory components of pollution related issues and independently formulates innovative approaches in the development of techniques, procedures and programs in order to solve the most complex, unusual or difficult environmental problems considering operational and/or project specifics.
• Provides subject matter expertise input into the development of internal and external environmental training materials.
• Provides work and project leadership to consultants, junior environmental specialist, and works with peer technical staff to solve complex pollution prevention/waste management issues.
• May assign portions of work to other environmental staff, consultants or other support staff, and direct and check work.
• Works independently in the technical specialty.
• The successful candidate will develop and foster strong, effective relationships with regulatory agencies and key non- governmental or stakeholder organizations.

What you bring

• A relevant university degree or post-graduate degree in the areas of geosciences, professional engineering, agrology, environmental sciences or other relevant discipline.
• The successful candidate must have the appropriate professional designation in British Columbia (e.g., P.Ag, P.Eng, P. Geo.). Due to the technical nature of the work, this is a requirement of the position under the Professional Governance Act of BC.
• A minimum of 8 years of directly related experience in contaminated site management in BC.
• An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
• Experienced in contaminated site work for small to large scale projects; management of environmental contractors and consultants; liaison with regulatory agencies; public and stakeholder consultation. The successful candidate will possess:
• Demonstrated and recognized technical ability related to air and waste authorizations, regulatory processes and development of strategic plans.
• A strong ability to influence decisions and a strong reputation as a technical specialist organization wide as well as in the external environment.
• Well-developed planning, organizational, research, analytical and problem-solving skills. Detail oriented.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent facilitation skills and demonstrated leadership abilities.
• Ability to manage relationships with employees at all levels, including the ability to work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams holding multiple interests.
• The ability to negotiate with contractors, regulators, and public stakeholders.
• An awareness of and alignment with BC Hydro's strategic direction.
• Excellent computer skills in word processing, database and spreadsheet applications.

• This is for a full-time permanent (FTR) M&P P3 opportunity on the Pollution Prevention team within Environment, headquartered at our Edmonds location in Burnaby.
• A condition of employment for this job is maintaining a Class 5 Driver's License or equivalent in good standing.
