Job summary

City of Hamilton is seeking an Environmental Enforcement Officer to inspect facilities, enforce by-laws, and lead investigations related to pollution control and sewer use. You will collect samples, review reports, issue notices, and coordinate with other agencies while maintaining high service standards.

The role requires knowledge of regulations, strong report writing, and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic municipal environment, including standby rotations for emergencies.

Qualifications

• Diploma in Engineering Technician or equivalent with relevant education/work experience.
• Knowledge of health/safety and environmental regulations applied to sampling and spills.
• Ability to investigate infractions and issue appropriate notices or warnings.
• Stand-by rotation availability for emergency responses such as chemical spills.
• Strong written reports, data entry and document control skills.

Responsibilities

• Inspect facilities to ensure compliance with by-laws and regulations.
• Enforce pollution control and abatement measures; review engineering reports.
• Collect samples, review lab data, and prepare evidentiary materials.
• Issue tickets, notices, and assist in court actions when needed.
• Participate in policy development and inter-department coordination.
• Provide orientation and training to new staff; represent division at meetings.
