Reporting to the Supervisor, Land & Property Surveys and under the direction of a Engineering Technologist Technician 1 (Land Survey Party Chief), the Engineering Technologist Technician 3 (Land Survey Assistant) performs cadastral, topographic, as-built, and pre-engineering surveys in support of the City’s infrastructure and capital works program.

Working in the field, you will assist with boundary evidence searches, topographic data collection, field measurements, survey calculations, and field notes. You will operate modern survey equipment, including robotic total stations, GNSS receivers, digital levels and work alongside experienced Ontario Land Surveyors (OLS), Land Survey Party Chiefs, and technical staff on a wide variety of municipal surveying projects.

Major Responsibilities

• Performs land surveys as part of a cadastral field crew.
• Assists the ETT1 (Party Chief) with field measurements, data collection, coordinate geometry, survey calculations, field note preparation, and documentation.
• Operates and maintains a variety of modern survey equipment used to complete field assignments.
• Investigates,researches, collects, maintains, and analyzes survey-related information and data, and assists with the preparation of reports and recommendations.
• Prepares sketches and technical documentation and reads and interprets technical drawings, survey plans, and related documents.
• Responds to complaints and inquiries.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications:

• Post-secondary education in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
• Experience operating modern survey field equipment such as robotic total stations, GNSS systems, levels, etc.
• Experience in performing manual and computerized mathematical calculations used in Cadastral land surveying.
• Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario "G" driver's licence and be eligible to qualify for a City driver's permit.

You must also haves:

• Knowledge of cadastral land surveying principles, practices, and terminology.
• Membership or eligibility for membership with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) will be considered an asset.
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and safe work practices applicable to this work.
• Ability to prepare accurate field notes in accordance with the standards of the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors (AOLS).
• Ability to read, interpret, and evaluate legal survey evidence, reference plans, engineering drawings, legal descriptions, and other documentary records.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with colleagues, stakeholders, contractors, and members of the public.
• Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize work, manage multiple assignments, and work independently with minimal supervision.
• Physical ability to perform field survey work, including walking long distances, lifting and carrying survey equipment, and working safely over uneven terrain.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and in active traffic, construction, and other field environments.
• Ability to travel to various work locations in a timely and efficient manner.
