Job summary

Canadian Natural Resources Limited is seeking a student for a 12-month internship at the Horizon Oil Sands site in Calgary. You will assist the Upgrading and Utilities Engineering Team with operations, maintenance, or construction support using Hexagon Smart Plant and data-centric systems.

The role emphasizes collaboration across Operations, Maintenance, and Project teams, development of automation, and data integration while applying Electronics/Mechanical or Computer Science knowledge.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's program, or within 1 year of graduation, in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical) or Computer Science.
  • Programming experience in C++, C#, VBScript, Python is an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license with clean record.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Upgrading and Utilities Engineering Team with operations, maintenance or construction support using Hexagon (Smart Plant) tools.
  • Support data-centric systems and automation initiatives to meet continuous improvement goals.
  • Integrate data across multiple systems and collaborate with project and operations teams.
  • Review assets to improve maintenance frequency and outcomes.
  • Work with interdisciplinary teams to resolve engineering data tool issues and improve workflows.
  • Collaborate with the 3D modeling team to enhance deliverables and reconcile data across documentation.
  • Assist in writing code to automate data processes and support as-building activities.

  • Job location: Calgary, Alberta – Head Office
  • Shift schedule: 5 days on, 2 days off, 8 hours per day (Monday – Friday)
  • Term length: 12 months
  • Term starts: January and May 2027

Key Accountabilities:

  • Assist the Upgrading and Utilities Engineering Team in activities relating to operations, maintenance or construction support, in the use of Engineering and design systems based on Hexagon (Smart Plant) suite of products
  • Support the EIM team in identifying improvements in the data centric systems to meet aim in continuous improvement practices and contribute to meet Wildly Important Goals
  • Support the integration of data across multiple data centric solutions and identify opportunities for automation
  • Collaborate with project and operations teams to ensure proper alignment with operations needs and requirements
  • Review assets and data to see where we can improve the frequency of maintenance and be able to improve
  • Interact with various disciplines and departments within Operations, Maintenance, or project execution teams to identify solutions to issues related to engineering design tools
  • Work with the 3D modeling team to identify ways for enhancing their workflows, quality of deliverables from the 3D modeling tool, and facilitate resolution of data inconsistencies
  • Assist in writing code to automate data processes related to engineering information content
  • Assist the As-building team reconciling concurrent engineering information together with actual field conditions to facilitate as building of documentation and data centric systems

What You Bring to The Role:

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program, or within one year of graduation, in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical) or Computer Science
  • Previous engineering experience is considered an asset
  • Computer programming (C++, C#, VBScript, Python) is considered an asset
  • Previous field experience is considered an asset
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license or equivalent out of province license with a reasonably clean driver's abstract and be comfortable driving work trucks in a safe manner
