Job summary

Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) in Calgary, Alberta, invites students to join a 12‑month internship at the Horizon Oil Sands site. You will work alongside industry professionals on operations, maintenance and engineering data projects using Hexagon Smart Plant and related tools.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program, or within one year of graduation, in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical) or Computer Science.
  • Previous engineering experience is considered an asset.
  • Programming experience in C++, C#, VBScript, Python is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Upgrading and Utilities Engineering Team using Hexagon (Smart Plant) tools for operations, maintenance or construction support.
  • Support data-centric system improvements to meet continuous improvement goals.
  • Contribute to integration of data across multiple data-centric solutions and identify automation opportunities.
  • Collaborate with project and operations teams to align with needs and requirements.
  • Review assets and data to improve maintenance frequency and data quality.
  • Interact with interdisciplinary teams to resolve engineering design-tool issues.
  • Work with the 3D modeling team to enhance workflows and deliverables.
  • Write code to automate data processes related to engineering information content.
  • Assist as-building team reconciling concurrent engineering with field conditions.

  • Job location: Calgary, Alberta – Head Office
  • Shift schedule: 5 days on, 2 days off, 8 hours per day (Monday – Friday)
  • Term length: 12 months
  • Term starts: January and May 2027
  • Safety sensitive position: Yes
Key Accountabilities
  • Assist the Upgrading and Utilities Engineering Team in activities relating to operations, maintenance or construction support, in the use of Engineering and design systems based on Hexagon (Smart Plant) suite of products
  • Support the EIM team in identifying improvements in the data centric systems to meet aim in continuous improvement practices and contribute to meet Wildly Important Goals
  • Support the integration of data across multiple data centric solutions and identify opportunities for automation
  • Collaborate with project and operations teams to ensure proper alignment with operations needs and requirements
  • Review assets and data to see where we can improve the frequency of maintenance and be able to improve
  • Interact with various disciplines and departments within Operations, Maintenance, or project execution teams to identify solutions to issues related to engineering design tools
  • Work with the 3D modeling team to identify ways for enhancing their workflows, quality of deliverables from the 3D modeling tool, and facilitate resolution of data inconsistencies
  • Assist in writing code to automate data processes related to engineering information content
  • Assist the As-building team reconciling concurrent engineering information together with actual field conditions to facilitate as building of documentation and data centric systems
What You Bring To The Role
  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program, or within one year of graduation, in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical) or Computer Science
  • Previous engineering experience is considered an asset
  • Computer programming (C++, C#, VBScript, Python) is considered an asset
  • Previous field experience is considered an asset
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license or equivalent out of province license with a reasonably clean driver’s abstract and be comfortable driving work trucks in a safe manner
