Engineering & Commercialization Full Time Toronto, ON

At New School Foods, our mission is to accelerate the transition to a sustainable food system. Using our proprietary and purpose-built production technologies, we are creating the next generation of meat and seafood alternatives, which are designed to appeal to the average consumer. Our first product is a delicious plant-based filet that looks, cooks, tastes and flakes like Salmon, that’s full of Omega 3’ and protein. All with a lower carbon footprint, zero mercury, and made without harming the ocean.

Our new Engineering Director will oversee our growing team of engineers as they take our line from pilot line to large scale production. Working directly with the CEO and senior leadership, this role will create the vision for our large scale production and drive the team to make this vision a reality.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Own the scaling of the current production line; taking current processes and updating them to allow for larger volumes and faster production.
• Create the roadmap to scaling our existing production line from a manual process to a continuous / semi-continuous process.
• Lead and coach a team of mechanical, prototype, and process engineers.
• Manage new project initiatives and assist in developing engineering budgets.
• Draft cost estimates for process design and upgrades.
• Source and procure off-the-shelf equipment.
• Support commissioning and troubleshooting processes.
• Ensure all plans and equipment comply with all applicable safety, food safety, and regulatory standards.
• Prepare documentation including SOPs, risk assessments, and project timelines.
• Design and develop technical drawings using AutoCAD.

YOU WILL BRING

• 5+ years of experience in process design and scaling production lines. Bonus if it’s within food & beverage, or it’s with systems involving heating & cooling.
• Proven experience in project management including timeline creation, budgeting, resourcing, and managing cross-functional project teams.
• Understanding of electrical power systems, mechanical assemblies, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and pneumatic systems.
• Thorough knowledge of hygienic design.
• High attention to detail.
