The Director of Engineering at Manulife will lead our dynamic Group Benefits Member Digital Engineering teams to deliver innovative web and mobile applications that align with our strategic objectives. This role is crucial to our technical strategy and involves leading all aspects of the entire lifecycle of our mobile and web software development, from concept to deployment and support. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in mobile and web development, exceptional leadership skills, and a passion for innovation and product delivery.
Position Responsibilities:
Collaborating with team Engineering Managers, lead and mentor the engineering team across different levels (associate to senior level) and physical locations, fostering a culture of ownership, communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement across the numerous full-stack, mobile, back-end, and quality engineers on the team.
Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of high-quality, user-friendly web and native mobile applications for both iOS and Android.
Collaborate multi-functionally with product managers, UI/UX, architects, and other partners to define and implement product strategies and roadmaps.
Effectively manage third party vendors, reviewing agreements and managing expectations.
Ensure the performance, quality, responsiveness, and security of applications and services, and proactively drive continuous improvement of these assets.
Stay updated with the latest technology trends and evaluating their applicability to company goals, while mitigating future challenges.
Manage project timelines, resources, and budgets, assessing and prioritize work based on urgency and impact.
Supervise and report on project progress, identifying and addressing any issues or risks.
Drive innovative projects from inception to completion.
Provide technical leadership and insights into development practices, constantly optimizing how the team operates efficiently.
Track and manage issues within the engineering domain, ensuring timely resolution and communication.
Support the account management team with customer interactions, providing technical expertise and guidance.
Review and sign off release and disaster recovery plans, reviewing all testing and performance evidence, and validate approvals on documentation (architecture, risk approvals, support handovers).
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
Shown experience in leading a mobile and / or web development teams with a successful program delivery track record.
Familiarity of native mobile development (iOS, Android) and automated testing frameworks (Swift, Kotlin, React Native, Flutter, NodeJS).
Familiarity of modern web and automated testing frameworks (React, NodeJS) as well as .NET, Spring boot, etc.
Excellent leadership, communication, decision making (across product and engineering), team member management, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
Proven ability to improve team culture, communication, and performance management, supporting the team’s growth and pushing them to achieve excellence.
Managing R&D projects and focusing on high-quality work.
Familiarity with continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) practices and drive continuous improvement in developer standard processes.
Strong understanding of Agile methodologies, with exposure to SAFE a plus.
Experience with New Relic, Log Rocket, and/or other application / mobile monitoring and issue tracking tools.

HybridSalary range is expected to be between

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
